We went for a drive down to Banks Penisula and discovered the photos don't do it justice. The hills and the water are amazing, and there are a lot of great little shops and cafes.

This was the first place in New Zealand that we went after Christchurch. I honestly felt like we had driven into a postcard. It was absolutely stunning. Make sure you take it easy on the road as it was very windy and there were a few steep drops. The green rolling hills and the long harbour make for some great photos.

Spent a day in Akaroa which is steeped in history as the spot where the south island was almost claimed as a French colony. A large number of fine restruants and bars, plus a jump off spot for dolphin and whale watching.

Lovely villages and more wildlife then we saw in most other parts of NZ. Scary road to some of the bays though....We loved Akaroa, classy spot to relax.

The circular drive (on the Summit Road and through Little River) to Akaroa prepares you for the South Island's vistas. The views are stupendous.
