Owner description: Banks Peninsula near Christchurch, New Zealand is a must see for its stunning views, beautiful bays and quirky campgrounds. Little River is the gateway to the peninsula. The township has a hotel/pub, 2 cafes, a petrol station, art gallery, craft store and small museum. There are B&Bs, plus the Little River Campground in Okuti Valley Road. They have affordable campervan parks with power, cabins and tentsites set beside a river. The southern bays have some of the best surf, if you know the secret spots as well as good, safe swimming beaches, walking tracks and the Little River Rail Trail. It is a a place that is often over looked as tourists head to Akaroa. If you want to experience more than the usual, to get off the beaten track and really explore, ask at the craft station, which has an info centre.

This place is well worth the drive out from the city. Akaroa is a beautiful spot with many amenities and the drive out along the scenic route is well worth the effort. The views are stunning.

“Nice area”
Reviewed March 25, 2013

We travelled out to Akaroa from Christchurch and were amazed by the number of coaches going the other direction, when we were coming down into Akaroa we saw the two cruise ships anchored in the bay. I would recommend if travelling here to check if the are going to be any ships in as it gets very busy in a small town like this with thousands of extra tourists in it.
We still had a good couple of hours here and they have great fish and chips.

There were four of us travelling in a four wheel drive and aged late sixties. The walks were easy to handle, the scenery wonderful and will come back again to the Peninsula

“Blue sea, green hills”
Reviewed March 11, 2013

We took the day trip from Christchurch out to Akaroa on the Banks Peninsular. It is a beautiful spot - a sparkling blue bay surrounded by rolling green hills. The town of Akaroa has some excellent cafes on the esplanade, the usual run of gift/craft shops and some up-market food shops reflecting the historic French influence. There is a lovely 7k walk into the hills from the outskirts of the town, with great views over the bay - which we took: the i-SITE can provide you with a map.

The scenery was incredible and the cafes were amazing, just a hop, skip and a jump away from christchurch. The people were so friendly and engaging.
