Owner description: Banks Peninsula near Christchurch, New Zealand is a must see for its stunning views, beautiful bays and quirky campgrounds. Little River is the gateway to the peninsula. The township has a hotel/pub, 2 cafes, a petrol station, art gallery, craft store and small museum. There are B&Bs, plus the Little River Campground in Okuti Valley Road. They have affordable campervan parks with power, cabins and tentsites set beside a river. The southern bays have some of the best surf, if you know the secret spots as well as good, safe swimming beaches, walking tracks and the Little River Rail Trail. It is a a place that is often over looked as tourists head to Akaroa. If you want to experience more than the usual, to get off the beaten track and really explore, ask at the craft station, which has an info centre.

There were four of us travelling in a four wheel drive and aged late sixties. The walks were easy to handle, the scenery wonderful and will come back again to the Peninsula

We took the day trip from Christchurch out to Akaroa on the Banks Peninsular. It is a beautiful spot - a sparkling blue bay surrounded by rolling green hills. The town of Akaroa has some excellent cafes on the esplanade, the usual run of gift/craft shops and some up-market food shops reflecting the historic French influence. There is a lovely 7k walk into the hills from the outskirts of the town, with great views over the bay - which we took: the i-SITE can provide you with a map.

The scenery was incredible and the cafes were amazing, just a hop, skip and a jump away from christchurch. The people were so friendly and engaging.

The drives to Akaroa is great, or better than the destination. Must also take the "tourist drive, route 1". Enormous views around. Top 10 campsite is one of the better Top 10s. Last, must also try the Akaroa Fish and Chip place on the waterfront, close to the piers.

An easy drive from Christchurch Akaroa is a great place to get away from it all, great cafes and restaurants and funky shops to check out too! The iconic Fish and Chip shop recently burnt down, but they have rebuilt and if past history is anything to go by the new shop will be serving great fish and chips as they did from the old shop. We don't eat fish and chips too often - watching the waistline - but Akaroa is definitely the exception.
