Owner description: Banks Peninsula near Christchurch, New Zealand is a must see for its stunning views, beautiful bays and quirky campgrounds. Little River is the gateway to the peninsula. The township has a hotel/pub, 2 cafes, a petrol station, art gallery, craft store and small museum. There are B&Bs, plus the Little River Campground in Okuti Valley Road. They have affordable campervan parks with power, cabins and tentsites set beside a river. The southern bays have some of the best surf, if you know the secret spots as well as good, safe swimming beaches, walking tracks and the Little River Rail Trail. It is a a place that is often over looked as tourists head to Akaroa. If you want to experience more than the usual, to get off the beaten track and really explore, ask at the craft station, which has an info centre.

Banks Peninsular is the remains of two extinct volcanoes. The area is full of natural beauty and makes a wonderful day trip from Christchurch. Picturesque Akaroa and Harbour is situated on the southern side, the working port of Lyttleton Harbour is on the north. Explore the back roads and take in the views. try She restaurant in Govenor's Bay for a light lunch and a taste of home-made chocolate.

I went with the French Connection daily shuttle service and the hostel had recommended a harbour cruise. I had a fabulous day out.

The Banks Peninsula is off the beaten track of most New Zealand tourists from overseas, but it's well worth the effort to get there. Centered around the caldera of an ancient volcano, its steep hills shelter New Aealand's only French colony, Akaroa, on one side and Maori settlements on the other.

Our first attempt to get to Akaroa near the tip of the Peninsula was thwarted by a mighty strorm - record rainfall, floods, and "slips." We turned back to the refuge of Christchurch and the next day got through to Akoroa and our B&B destination, the Olive Grove in Richardson Bay.

The drive in both cases was beautiful and wild - sheep being herded on the road, lots of twisting roadways leading to wonderful vistas of bays and mountains.

The town of Akoroa is a lovely French port that deserves it's own review.
