This was our first stay in NZ. Absolutely superb. Lovely room, great breakfast and super staff. Everyone was very helpful. This B&B is perfectly located... close to the city centre, close to many attractions and on the bus route to/from the airport. Bus no 29 goes from the airport to the city centre and back and stops outside the door... very convenient and cheap.

We have just spent 4 weeks traveling around NZ staying in hotels and b&bs finally staying at the Orari b&b. Everywhere we went we experienced what we now understand to be true NZ hospitality, friendliness and generally nice people. Until now.
Whilst the room (Room 6) is clean and has the usual basic facilities, the attitude of the staff is not what we have learned to expect in NZ. There is certainly no warmth or friendliness or interest in what we've been doing. If you are a vegetarian and you want a cooked breakfast you get 2 eggs. For a couple we got 3 slices of toast with no chance of more or more tea/coffee.
This is a bit of a rant but it is so disappointing after all the incredible experiences we have had everywhere else in NZ and so I suppose it makes it that bit easier to be going back to the UK. If you stay at the Orari before anywhere else in NZ then you won't know what true NZ hospitality can be like and so all the above will mean nothing to you! I am pleased for all those others who had such a wonderful experience at the b&b - wish we had.

Dear peb747,

I am very disappointed to hear that you found your stay below par. Most guests and their reviews comment especially about our warmth and hospitality, where nothing is too much trouble, which is definitely our intention.

Firstly, room 6 is a room most people particularly enjoy as it is very spacious with a lovely box window and garden outlook. It has a brand new ensuite bathroom and very high quality bed and bathroom linen and the selection of different teas and hot drink options in the rooms is extensive.

The continental breakfast buffet has a wonderful array of food on offer - more than most B&Bs. We would normally ask all guests if there is anything else they would like, often several times during the meal and I apologise if this was not the case for you. We do make 3 pieces of toast per couple as we find we are constantly throwing out so much, when we start with more, which is understandable considering we also have croissants and home made muffins as part of the buffet.

We do remember when you had breakfast that Mrs B ordered bacon and eggs while Mr B ordered eggs only. Sorry, we did not realise this was because Mr B is vegetarian as it is not unusual for guests to order just eggs - for all sorts of reasons - and our free range eggs are delicious, so why not? Incidentally, the extensive buffet selection is all vegetarian..

We are always very interested in everyone's travels but we take our cue from our guests as to how much they want to chat, as often people just want to relax relax and / or interact with the other guests, rather than feeling they must chat with their hosts. If you want to, we certainly do! You say in your review "I am pleased for all those others who had such a wonderful experience at the b&b" - you have obviously read the experiences of the vast majority, have been most enjoyable and that they have loved staying at Orari.

We would love the opportunity of having you to stay again, if you do return to NZ as it sounds as though you did not have the experience we would have wanted you to and we are very sorry for that.

Regards,
Jan,

We arrived late afternoon and were due to leave very early next morning. The owner is very welcoming and before showing us to our room she arranged transport to the station and also arranged for breakfast to be available to us before we left. The room we had was compact with a sloping ceiling - not a problem for one night but would have been for a longer stay. The usual complimentary drink making and toileteries were provided. A great idea was the provision of an additional 'make up' face cloth, however, on this occasion this was not required. The breakfast that was left for us was more than adequate and much appreciated! Although our stay was brief and our room a little small our impression was that Orari would be a great place to stay.

booked the orari as a last night touch of luxury after a touring holiday of New Zealand in a camper van, i thought it looked lovely and i was right. the staff were very helpful with nothing too much trouble, we dropped our luggage off early in the morning to return our camper bus to the airport, the staff allowed us to book in early, we had the twin room (rm 10) which was very comfortable with two double beds, a large airy, beautifully decorated room up in the eaves with a lovely en-suite (good shower). the house had a beautiful lounge and breakfast room with doors leading out onto a very pretty courtyard garden where a free glass of wine was enjoyed in the sunshine. Breakfast was very nice with a good choice and the bacon was nicely crisped!! just as i asked for. Only a 5 minute walk to cathedral square, the botanical gardens and 15 mins from the airport with a nice variety of evening eateries nearby and helpful, informative staff the beautifully furnished Orari is well worth a visit, if you are going to Christchurch go to the Orari.

We spent our first two nights in New Zealand at Orari. The owner is very friendly and welcoming. Our room was beautifully appointed and breakfast was delicious. There is a very comfortable lounge for guest use where one can meet fellow guests for a glass of wine at 5.30 or just relax. Also a pretty garden. It is just perfect for exploring Christchurch. Very close to the city centre, the museum and the botanical gardens and several good restaurants.

The best location, right in the city, walking distance to the Botanical Gardens and City Tour. Very helpful Manager suggested Strawberry Fare, a walking distance restaurant that was one of our best dinners in 4 weeks. Interesting open top bus tour of the Red (?)Zone, the inner city that suffered the most losses from the earthquake. Ruined 1800 of 2500 commercial buildings. Beautiful plantings around the old historic home. Lovely neighborhood.

We arrived here straight off the plane from London for two nights. It was the perfect start to our holiday
The place is very centrally located easily accessible to everything and only 15 mins drive from airport. The lounge and dining room are exceptional and the evening glass of wine very welcome. breakfast is good and everything very comfortableThe bed was particularly comfortable and much needed after the flight. Our particular Room was apparently the smallest and it was a tight squeeze for our luggage so maybe worth checking
