“Lovely night but not our warmest welcome”
Reviewed December 7, 2011

We enjoyed a lovely night here at the end of a campervanning holiday recently. The rooms are beautiful and the bed was really comfortable. We enjoyed the port and sherry in the lounge, the dvd collection and the book exchange.

We did feel that the welcome we received on arrival was nowhere near as warm as those we'd received at all the campsite we'd been staying in beforehand...perhaps because our campervan was lowering the tone of the property! The owners were helpful though and gave us lots of info on local places to eat.

We enjoyed chatting to all the other guests at breakfast though, and the homemade fruit and jams were delicious. My husband was a little disappointed that the cooked breakfast was just egg, rather than the bacon promised in the info pack in the rooms, but it was a lovely breakfast nonetheless.

All in all we enjoyed the beautiful rooms and a bit of luxury to end our holiday but just wished our initial welcome had been a little less snooty perhaps!

We were only able to stay one night in Christchurch before taking the Tranz Scenic train to Greymouth but we were fortunate to find excellent accommodation at Elm Tree House.

Karen and Allen were the perfect host and hostess and the stay lived up to all expectations.
Although the property did not esacpe unscathed from the earthquake it did not affect the stay at all and the accommodation and hospitality were first class, with Allen even providing a detailed insight into the earthquake and really bringing it alive as to what it meant and how people had been affected.
An excellent recommendation for an evening meal and Karen was up early to provide the perfect send off with a beautifully cooked breakfast --we hope to return one day soon

This is a very well preserved period property with plenty of guest lounge space downstairs and 6 bedrooms upstairs. The breakfast room has a long table and you sit wherever you like and talk to whoever is around. Great for conversation, but not so good if you want to be quiet! Breakfast was good and plentiful.
Our bedroom was somewhat small for a 5 star accommodation. The bed was very comfortable but the bathroom was tiny - hardly big enough to swing a cat - but I think the other bedrooms have larger more luxurious bathrooms. If you dont like noise, ask for a room at the back of the property - ours fronted on to the main road and was quite noisy. Parking is a bit of an issue with limited parking spaces off road. However, if you have arrived from the airport, you probably wouldn't need a car - there are excellent dining places within a minute or so walk and shops within easy walking distance. For a city location and a smaller more intimate atmosphere than a hotel, then this would be a good choice.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the back of the house - its much quieter

Gorgeous house and fantastic hosts. We ended up here by accident, stuck in the great blizzard of aug 2011!! We would never have discovered this wonderful place, sitting in front of the fire playing cards, listening to the jukebox. 2 min walk to great shops and cafes (can highly recommend Brigettes). If you're lucky you may meet Harry & Max, your local friendly dachshund.
