Stayed 2 nights in Christchurch in order to do the Trans Alpine Train ride (FANTASTIC). Booked ahead of time for a motel for family, reasonably close ot the rail station. Andrew the Manager speaks and understands English as his second language, which was a definited problem for us in communicating. On arrival - checked in - filled out the guest details and as I handed the form (including my credit card details) back to the Manager - I noticed that the form had another persons details on the back. I explained to the Manager that this was confidential information and should NOT be shared by anyone .. the managers friend or staff member (not sure) who was in the office said, "oh we are trying to save paper". Not impressed.
In the room, all fairly basic, but okay - we were only paying $165 per night for 2 adults and 2 children, so as I say, you get what you pay for. Shower did have evidence of mold around the edges and the drain cover for the shower was broken and dirty. No tea towel to dry the dishes, so off to the office to ask for one. Neither the Manager or his assistant were able to understand what I was asking for despite my attempts at "charades" to explain my request. Firstly another 2 dish clothes (the size of a piece of office paper) were produced, then a large bath towel. Finally the assistant said he had a towel that he bought at briscoes - perfect, although obviously had been in the hot dryer as only 1/2 the size a tea towel usually is ... but it did the job. Extra bed (queen size) was placed in the lounge to accommodate the 4 of us - there were no springs in the base, and although I slept rather well, hubby woke with a sore back as a result. Main bedroom bed (double) was just fine. Our room was upstairs and near the back of the complex, so road traffic (off the busy Riccarton Road) was good from a noise point of view.
Advertising indicated that free shuttle to the train station was offered, the manager was able to organise that very promptly which was appreciated.
Having said all this which sounds fairly negative, Andrew the Manager was a pleasant young man and was trying to please, but at a guess, not a lot of training in the motel business (tourism industry) and certainly development in his conversational english would be of great benefit to the business.
We were looking for accommodation for a stay again in October, we won't be returning.
