Bella Vista Motel & Apartments
Ranked #69 of 146 Hotels in Christchurch
Reviewed July 5, 2013

Had a 3 night stay at the Bella Vista. The Managers were very accommodating to our requests while there and gave us plenty of assistance to find the things we needed. The room was lovely and clean, was warm, well equipped with kitchen necessities and the bed was very comfortable. Not far from town if you have a vehicle and on bus routes. Although some distance from the airport it was very easy to get both in and out finding it without trouble.

Room Tip: If I stayed here again I would definitely request a ground floor room as the stairs were a nuisance...

My fiance' and I stayed at Bella Vista Motel for 2 nights late June. We found it quite comfortable and neat. The owners were both very helpful, welcoming and approachable which made our stay even better. The rooms, although small were well equipped, clean and met all our needs. If we were to be picky we would suggest a fan in the bathroom would be a good addition to prevent over steaming the room. Overall we definitely recommend staying at Bella Vista. Also Very close proximity to the city.

As Christchurch is so broken we were lucky to be recommended to Bella Vista Christchurch, as so many places are gone.. The owers were friendly helpful and made us feel very welcome. It was a easy walk to the city and Speights Bar. The two bedroom apartment was clean had everything we needed and warm, perfect for our start of our South Island trip.

My wife and I stayed here on our last night in New Zealand. We had an early flight the next day and so didn't get too much time to spend here.

Although we were not supposed to check in until 2pm, we had to drop the car off in Christchurch Town at around midday. We arrived at the motel at around 11am and they let us store our suitcases there until check in time. We then took the car back to the depot (which was the other side of town). At this point I must give a thumbs up to Apex Car Rentals. Once we had dropped the car off the man there gave us a lift into the city centre, at no extra charge, and gave us a running commentary along the way and, later that afternoon, we got a bus from the city centre to the motel (less than 10 minutes away).

The room was compact but well equipped with all the usual facilities. It was clean and comfortable and the staff was friendly and helpful. Although this motel was on the edge of the city centre it was around a five minute walk to a great pub, which served some nice food. Also, there was a convenience store just across the road.

We would definitely stay here again and would recommend the establishment to friends.

The location on an avenue bounding the city centre meant that it was convenient for arriving from the north and when trying to navigate the city. We walked into the Botanic Gardens and Museum, taking only about 10 minutes even after having to divert around the closed Red Zone. A bus tour into the Red Zone was well worth the NZ$15 and a real eyeopener to the damage suffered. We had dinner at Speight's Ale House, a hotel only a block away from the motel. Each of our meals was fantastic and well priced. However, it was busy, despite being a Monday night, so a booking might be recommended. It was a typical motel room but clean, and comfortable. One night we took advantage of their BBQ area. They supply a basket containing the tools needed.

Now I when you are reading this review you will say not again...of course it is motel and it needs to give you value...but then not just because of value but also because of its location, i really appreciated my stay here...now..many of my fellow travellers could vote for hotels in city centre (like Ibis) or closer to Airport...I couldnot disagree but I dont think any motel in the city could compare with the motels located on Bealey Avenue because they take you directly to Hagley Park that can overwhelm you with its extent and its wonderful greenhouse or rose garden or the gold course...
Bella Vista is excellent because within 5 min you can drive to city centre or get onto the main south road or North Motorway within 10 min that shall open up your drive to Dunedin in south or Kaikora in north...but most of all i love this because i could jog to Hagley Park and just spend an entire evening there watching guys play rugby or walk in the woods or go have a game of golf....
coming to the hotel, it has well appointed rooms...fully equipped kitchen and the staff do great job of cleaning up the apartment when you are out...sleep quality does suffer if you have a room or apartment towards the bealey avenue...so try and get it more inside than on the road...and yes please do stock up...there are no stores nearby or no super marts nearby unless you can drive to city centre or you drive to Parkn Save at Synedham which is good 10 min drive...so if you are a backpacker or you have no car..then best of luck if you havenot stocked...and it more so becomes important because most of the diners or pubs nearby are well moderate to high priced (and if you can make do there is a Thai diner just west to the motel on caledonian road) and also you exactly dont want to stay in motel if you dont want to cook,,,do you?/there is just one vending machine in the motel and you cannot do with that...so please do pack and save in your apartment if you want to be full!!!...and yes jut be warned there are only 12 tv channels (sky Tv) and I did get bored after sometime...so stock up on movies if you have because there is a DVD player in all apartments and a great couch where you can just lay in and watch if you have nothing to do...
Other than that it i just about cozy for a good stay and yes if you want to see the impact of the great earthquake ..you can head down to city centre (christchurch cathedral) or just look at the eastern block wall in the motel and you can see cracks jigzagging all the way...but it seems a deliberate attempt on part of the operator to leave it as a reminder to that dreadful event..
Chirstchurch was awesome and i jut spent about half a day at the beach..but never regretted my stay at this motel because i was closer to the fantastic city folk living there who were among the most friendly i did find there...

Room Tip: Ask for rooms away from the Bealey Avenue as it gets noisy and in summer if you need to open you win...
