Convenient hotel if you arrive on a late flight in Christchurch or have an early morning flight. We did both. Pleasant staff, comfortable room. Free airport transfer but it is a 2 min walk if you prefer

Room Tip: Pay a bit extra for the updated rooms

Unlike other reviewers we had rather a good experience staying at the Sudima. We booked in just after midday after motoring 153k down from the beautiful town of Kaikoura passing once again through the scenic North Canterbury plains. The receptionist advised us that our room was available which allowed us a quick change before returning downstairs to enquire about local attractions we could visit. She was joined by a colleague, and they both advised us to make the bus journey into Christchurch. Overcoming our initial reluctance, we waited outside and caught the one of the very frequent services which run down Memorial Avenue and into the heart of the city. To say that we were unprepared for what we were to see is an understatement, but the devastation to this lovely city is apparent for all to see, after the second earthquake some 2 or so years ago. There are stark reminders of the event with many buildings silhouetted against the sky, waiting their turn to be raised to the ground and rebuilt. However the overwhelming sense of this city is of energy and enterprise as it rises again. To stroll through the main shopping and retail area is an absolute joy, with is colourful, converted sea-containers acting as temporary cafes, restaurants, banks and shops, and is a tribute to the can-do qualities of these indomitable Cantabrians. Returning to the Sudima later in the evening my wife and I felt uplifted, and apart from a morose driver on the No 3 bus that brought us there, we enjoyed our brief visit. We had rather a good meal at the hotel that night, and after a restful night we were roused early to drop our trusty little Toyota Yaris back with Hertz and to catch the flight back to our base in Tauranga up north. We have promised ourselves to revisit this vibrant and interesting city once more.

Room Tip: Ours was on the upper floor overlooking the central garden and was comfortable, quiet and clean

We booked into the Sudima Christchurch before a 7am international flight. This is the only airport hotel in Christchurch and the city is 25 minutes away so time is valuable at this time of the morning.

So, if you would like an airport hotel, this is the only practical option.

It should be noted however there are two 'wings' to the hotel - one new modern, and one old with paper thin walls. Half our our party received the former, however I got the latter.

The new rooms were a pleasant, clean and comfortable. The old rooms were near the road (noisy), I could hear conversations from the next room. The bed felt as though it was quite possibly original (i.e. 40 years old).

The restaurant was a nice surprise. It had a good selection and was reasonably priced - this is important as the only other identifiable option was McDonalds - a 5 min drive.

I would stay here again, but I would ensure I got a new room.

Room Tip: A new room not near the road

This room was booked by our travel agent for our last night in New Zealand as we had an early morning flight. The service at the reception was friendly and we were given instructions to our room. The trip to our room was a maze of fire doors and corridors which my husband said resembled an old dormitory corridor back in his army training days. Our room seemed to be at the very back of the motel and was dreadful. The bed was so soft you slipped off the side when sitting on it and we had basically no sleep. The bar fridge was missing and breakfast was over priced. We will be giving this feedback to our travel agent when we get black I don't like giving feedback like this but feel people should be aware as this was our last impression of New Zealand. The rest of our holiday was absolutely fantastic.

At check-in Staff acted as if they were too busy for us. Was nnot told that we needed parking permit. Asked for quiet room. Was given room next to cleaners office with carts stacked in hall and staff talking and music with door open. Room across hall was being renovated (jackhammering and construction noise). Called for different room. Front desk had attitude, "would call back". They did not . Called twice more, finally room was changed.

We stayed here twice - at the beginning and end of our visit to New Zealand. Our travel agent had booked for our initial visit and stated that we were on our honeymoon so we were upgraded. The room was quite nice and comfortable. Our second visit wasn't as nice. We got a basic room which was just that and quite noisy. The bed covers were thin and a little worse for wear. The hotel provides a shuttle service to and from the airport and kept our bags at no extra charge after check-out until our afternoon flight. The staff were very pleasant and helpful.
