lOVELY, LARGE DOUBLE ROOM WITH EN SUITE. cLEAN and serviced which was a bonus. Lots of nice touches, i.e. tea and coffee making facilities. Nice views. Good off street parking and very handily located. However, the place badly let down by the very poor kitchen facilities. Too small;poorly equipped and no where to sit down and eat other than at the table amongst the debris of people preparing their own food. Also very badly organised. The worst kitchen we found in 4 weeks hostelling in NZ. also feltthere were some problems with security.. a very young and possibly vulnerable hosteller was robbed whilst we were there.
Staff could have been more friendly.

Stayed at the YMCA for two nights in a double room which was very clean and very comfortable.

Reception staff were friendly and helpful and allowed us to store our bags until check-in time. (They are strict on the check-in time).

The room contained a comfortable QS bed, bar fridge, TV, tea and coffee making facilities. The bathroom was spacious, clean and the water pressure very good.

Location is perfect being a short walk into the city centre and across from the arts centre which has a small cinema and various cafe's/bars for meals etc. Parking is also available and included in the cost.

A continental breakfast is available for NZ$10 which includes toast, cereal, juice, tea/coffee - great value for NZ.

My husband and I stayed there for 4 nights last summer and it was great. The room was not too small and was clean. The shared bathroom was also clean (very important for me, so excellent). Great location, right next to the Botanical Garden, and just across the Art Center. Short stroll to the city (depends on how fast you walk =) I liked to stop now and then to enjoy the river and view and still found it close). The only downside was when you had plenty of young students in groups and you could hear them watching TV, singing, talking, running up and down the stairs. But, that's what hostel is. So, I definitely won't complain. Overall, I found this place really nice and cheap, and I'll come back and stay there this winter.

We stayed 3 nights in this hotel and were pleasantly surprised when we saw the room. For the reasonable price, it's quite a nice acommodation, very clean, spacious enough with ensuite, and with a big terrasse overlooking the botanical gardens. The café downstairs had nice breakfast. You can also park for free.
The location couldn't be better in Christchurch, very central, near the botanical gardens, and a short walk to the Cathedral Square.
We recommend it!

I stayed at the YMCA in Christchurch for two nights in August 2006.

I stayed in a single room, which had a balcony that looked out over a main street but with a good view of the nearby park. The room was clean and equipped with a desk, bed and wardrobe. I found it to be a good size for a single room. There is a heater in the room but because the window caught a lot of sun I didn't need to use it. Single rooms share bathrooms but the bathroom was very clean.

There is one kitchen on the first floor, which makes things around dinner time a little cramped and busy but the hostel has a canteen which most of the residents use rather than cook. The hostel has other facilities including a gym but I didn't use this whilst I was there.

At the time I stayed, the hostel was quiet as it was midweek. I did notice that the walls were not very well soundproofed and this might be a problem at a busy weekend.

The hostel is located centrally, very close to the park, museum and gallery of art.

I would highly recommend it as a budget place to stay in Christchurch.
