Stayed two nights. Hotel is good for a short term low budget stay. Nice clean room, you had access to your own balcony witch made room feel a bit more spacious. Had breakfast downstairs, wich was good and good extra service for a low budget hotel. Breakfast was good, nice rasinbread and yoghurt, yummy! Didn,t have to queu for the bathrooms, there were few of them in every floor. Only thing i didn,t enjoy was the noise at night time when people were running in and out and to the toilet..lot of doorbanging..

It was a good choice for us to stay in Christchurch: centrally located, very clean and relatively inexpensive. However central city district was still out of reach after 2011 earthquakes, Christchurch famous gardens, museums and central bus station were close by. The building itself didn`t look affected by quakes. It stands firmly. We even experienced by ourselves a couple of shock during our short one-night stay there. The building shook and rocked but didn`t suffer any damage.
There is a nice Robert Harris cafe on the ground floor, where we had breakfast.
Our room was twin, with shared bathrooms. Despite our late arrival at about 2AM, our room was ready awaiting us. Of course, it was too early for us to be checked out at 10AM next morning, our first morning in New Zealand after long flight the day before, but reception staff was very friendly and helpful and allowed us to leave our luggage until evening. So we had the whole day free to go sightseeing around Christchurch till our next flight.
As a whole we were satisfied by our experience with YMCA and would recommend it for other travelers.

i stayed in a single basic room for $60. it was small, with a single bed and desk and dirty desk chair. there's no sink in the room. shared bathrooms in the hallways were usually available and mainly clean. the hallways have a rundown, depressing appearance. the room had a balcony, which was nice for fresh air because the room had a terrible, dank, moldy smell.
soap but no shampoo was provided. it was basically a hostel with privacy. ther is no sauna as advertised.
the brochure and pictures of the place are misleading and make it look much nicer than it it.
i suppose they can overcharge because so many hotels in christchurch were closed by the earthquakes.
location is good for the botanic garden, the museum and the airport bus.
the desk personnel were always very friendly, polite and helpful.

We didn't know what to expect by staying at a YMCA, but it was very similar to the hostels. The room was clean and overlooked the botanical garden. We had a private bath. Walking distance to the Avon Boat House and the downtown ReStart area. The kitchen was closed for the holidays, but the staff gave us some ideas of places to eat. We liked the boat house restraunt for breakfast. We felt 3 earthquakes while we were there, but they were minor, and the staff kept a calm and reassuring attitude.

This was a last minute accommodation in Christchurc on the 24th December, as my plane was diverted to Wellington the day prior due to an earthquake in Christchurch. Being Christmas Eve I thought that it would be a bit busy, but it wasn't. The staff were helpful and accommodating, the single room was on the 4th floor and I had a balcony. The bathroom was clean and I didn't have to wait.

The staff gave me a map and told me some of the best places to get a coffee and something to eat, however due to it being Christmas Eve I didn't hold out much hope of finding either. ( I didn't). The showers were great, hot and nice, the best was nice and comfy. the only thing I found worrysome was the constant tremours which occured, some harder than most. Other than that, the place was great!!

The kitchen was filthy, greasy and mouldy. The staff at check-in were not responsive, even though there was nobody else waiting to be served. There was no explanation or direction as to where the rooms where. They took a key deposit and point blank refused to give it back-therefore they STOLE my money. The worse experience i have EVER had backpacking. There is more reasonably priced, much cleaner and better service to be had in hostels elsewhere in Christchurch.

Room Tip: Just dont go there.

Christchurch has had the heart ripped out of it and it can be difficult to find accomodation in the city centre (even harder to find a restaurant) but the YMCA provides a great base. We had a twin ensuite room which was basic but just what was required and had a lovely view on to the Botanic Gardens. Whilst in Christchurch, you must visit the Botanics - the rose gardens were in full bloom whilst we were there and were stunning.

Top tip - there aren't many eating options near YMCA, so bear this in mind if you don't have transport. There is one restaurant / cafe a block away (opposite uni buildings) which does great food, cakes and coffees.
