“Good place to get the naked bus”
Reviewed November 18, 2013

I stayed at this hostel as I was getting the NakedBus early the next morning and it is a good location to get the bus as its a two minute walk across the road. When I arrived at the hostel there was quite a big queue to check in as only one computer was working. However the reception girls were very friendly and there was a lot of guides and leaflets in the reception area that are free to use. As I finally got into my room there was 2 bunk beds which was a good thing as there was only 3 other people sharing the room which is not a huge amount. There is a big kitchen located downstairs of the hostel and a seating area with sofas. However the only bad thing I found about this hostel is the shower facilities are situated downstairs only which means you have to walk through the kitchen area to get to the showers. This made me feel quite uncomfortable when having to walk through the kitchen area.

Overall I would say this is an okay place to stay if you are going to stay no more than a few nights. There is not a huge amount to do in Christchurch due to the earthquake and there is not many shops nearby.

YHA N, Manager at YHA Christchurch Rolleston House, responded to this review, December 18, 2013
Hi Katie,

Thanks for taking the time to review our hostel. We appreciate your feedback, especially regarding the location of the showers.

YHA Christchurch Rolleston House is a beautiful historic heritage building, and because of our heritage listing we cannot change the location of our bathrooms. We now have bathrobes available at reception for guests to use and I’ve let our staff know the importance of passing this info on to our guests.

I’m glad you enjoyed our helpful staff and our convenient location to the bus stop.

Thank you for staying with us and we hope to see you again in the future.

Kind regards,

Chris Dumicich, Assistant Manager

Location is very good as the naked bus stop just opposite the hostel. Friendly staff help with check in. Quiet, clean, big kitchen, comfortable bed. However, the disadvantages is the building kinda old, thin wall.

I stayed one night in the private double room with ensuite facilities and was pleasantly surprised by the size of the room! It's spacious, coupled with TV and a pantry with tea/coffee making facilities.

Although washroom is old, water supply works fine. Bed is firm with blanket and duvet covers. This is really a good value/alternative for couples who wish to save $ on accommodation.

The only cons would be the noise as room is located in level one next to kitchen and back door. I was woken up in the middle of the night from somemore who's bathing but other than that, this is a nice place to stay in.

Located just opposite I-site and Christchurch museum, the botanical garden is just a few steps away. Great location;)

Spent 1 night here in a 6 bed dorm. Everything was clean and the staff were very helpful. The showers were down stairs but this is probably due to it being an old building. A lot of the main bus companies stop opposite the hostel which is helpful as the main bus station is a 15 main walk away.

Room Tip: Room 2 has access to a large balcony. Good for (quiet) drinking games!

I stayed for two nights in a mixed dorm. Check in was fine, and staff were generally pleasant and helpful throughout. The dorm was clean, and reasonably quiet, although the bunks were a little clunky. The main bathrooms are on the ground floor (with one toilet upstairs). This was not a particular bother to me, and I understand that this is because the building is a historic structure. The lounge area was reasonably comfortable, although not super cosy.
It is useful to bring food with you, as the area is currently lacking much in the way of reasonably priced restaurants or fast food outlets. Hopefully as the city centre picks back up, the range of facilities in the local area will improve. The kitchen was a terrible mess one morning, as people had obviously been cooking late in the night and not cleaning up after themselves. Another guest reported that their milk had been stolen.
Wifi was down on the morning of my departure, but staff were looking into it.
The hostel is right next to the museum and very convenient for looking around the city centre or taking bus tours. A half hour(ish) walk brings you to a lively Westfield shopping mall and big cinema. Again, as the city rebuilds, I'm sure there will be lots more options closer to the hostel.
It is good to see budget accommodation bouncing back in Christchurch and hopefully the hostel will be able to maintain standards whilst the rest of the city follows suit.

The staff were helpful, the kitchen and communal area are big and clean, good central location. Unfortunately the dorm room I was in had the most creakiest bunk beds ever, even just turning over in bed was very noisy, so none of us got much sleep.

I could stay here only one night because the hostel was always fully booked, and I can understand why. Big and clean kitchen, big and clean bathrooms (even if their location was not the best: you have to pass through the kitchen to go to the showers), nice rooms, just beside the botanical garden. Friendly and helpful staff. It is the place where I would stay again in Christchurch.
