Owner description: The TranzAlpine is a long-distance train between Christchurch and Greymouth, from one coast of New Zealand to the other. Unlike normal passenger trains, the TranzAlpine is designed to provide a window to New Zealand's best scenery, with large reclined seating and huge panoramic windows. The spectacular TranzAlpine journey begins by roaming through the vast farmsteads of the Canterbury Plains to the spectacular gorges and valleys of the Waimakariri River. The TranzAlpine then ascends into the majestic Southern Alps to Arthurs Pass National Park, before descending through lush beech forest to the West Coast town of Greymouth - a great base for visits to Punakaiki and the always-popular glaciers. All services feature panoramic windows, reclined seating, GPS triggered at-seat commentary, a fully licensed cafe, toilets, and open air viewing decks. The TranzAlpine is operated by The Great Journeys of New Zealand, and runs daily throughout the year.

“Great customer service ”

Did the tranzalpine and straight away we were welcomed with warmth and kindness..

Easy to find and board the train itself.
Decor is nice but the seats may make you numb after an hour. But they stop regularly in order for you to walk around and also they have a lovely view in deck at your disposal

Food is very average and very over priced..

One thing they could do to make this trip better would be to maybe install some sort of wifi system as there is minimal to no coverage in some places where the train goes.

Happy travels!

“Well worth it!”
Reviewed July 29, 2014

I have been in Christchurch on business for several weeks and needed something fun to do on the weekend. I wanted to be able to get out and see some of the country and the TranzAlpine train is an excellent way to do just that! It's winter here now, but I imagine the train ride is just as spectacular during the spring and summer months. Booking my ticket and checking-in/boarding was simple. The train staff are very friendly and helpful. The services on board were wonderful too. I ordered a hot breakfast and coffee, which was very good. In fact, the closest thing I have to a complaint is that the KiwiRail company should spring for a second espresso machine; there was just one poor, overworked woman working making coffee and hot chocolate for the 200 or so passengers on board!

Most of the passengers on the train were headed to Greymouth on the west coast, but I opted to disembark at Moana, a small lake-side village just over the alps. It was a decision I did not regret. Lake Brunner is a beautiful mountain lake with a serene village and a cozy cafe just across the road from the train station. I was on a return trip the very same day and that gave me a good couple hours to eat lunch and meander around the lake and village before heading back to Christchurch.

To sum up, I highly recommend this trip!

“Great way to see the scenery”
Reviewed July 28, 2014 via mobile

Well organised from the Christchurch end, we booked tickets and breakfast in advance. You are able to take luggage up to 20 kg x2 each, and it travels in a separate carriage, which is convenient. The train stops several times, plenty of opportunities for taking pictures of the Alps and the great scenery. The real let down was the food, frankly some of it was not far away from being inedible, and not cheap. At the Greymouth end the luggage was just randomly put on the station, which lead to an un organised scramble. Overall the trip, and the views were very good, definitely worth doing, but periphery items could be much better

“Good fun!”
Reviewed July 25, 2014

We all really enjoyed out trip from Christchurch to Greymouth. Though the weather was pretty bad, and it was freezing cold, we spent most of the trip in the open carriage. The landscape was beautiful, and imagine it must be stunning in good weather. Glad we only did one way though, as a return trip (as some people were doing) would have been a bit long I think.

“Fantastic trip”
Reviewed July 23, 2014

Really enjoyed our trip on the Tranz Alpine. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The first hour takes you out through suburban Christchurch which is moderately interesting but once you hit the southern Alps the scenery is drop dead gorgeous and I spent a lot of the journey in the photographers carriage - open to the air which makes it very cold (this was a winter trip) but perfect for feeling that you are right in the scenery.
