Owner description: The TranzAlpine scenic train journey travels between Christchurch and Greymouth, from one coast of New Zealand to the other. From the comfort of world class carriages you'll see the fields of the Canterbury Plains and farmland, followed by the spectacular gorges and river valleys of the Waimakariri River. Your train then climbs into the majestic Southern Alps to Arthurs Pass National Park, before descending through lush beech rainforest to the West Coast town of Greymouth - a great base for visits to Punakaiki and the always-popular glaciers. All services feature state award winning carriages including panoramic side and sky-view windows, GPS triggered at-seat commentary, a fully licensed cafe, and open air viewing decks. The TranzAlpine operates a daily return service throughout the year.

“This train rocks”
Reviewed September 17, 2013

We had heard about the Trans Alpine - so included it in our holiday. Sooo Good. We loved it.
Had the best day because it had snowed overnight and scenery ( for us Aussies ) was magnificent. It was the best part of our 3 week motor home holiday in NZ.
* A tip - do not book Trans Alpine train on overseas websites they charge an extra $80 pp.
Phone and book direct with New Zealand Trains in Auckland for NZ$96 pp one way. C/church to Greymouth.
We hired an Apex car in Greymouth - no car return to Greymouth necessary and no extra costs.

“Great but........”
Reviewed September 13, 2013

We took the train on 10th September, the first day of the storm, and we were mightily relieved to reach Christchurch, albeit 2 hours late. Views weren't great because of extensive cloud cover, and then the dust storms on the Canterbury plains. When it became obvious that we were going to be delayed, then the dining car reopened to offer free coffee or tea, which was great, but for almost 3 hours they wouldn't sell anything because they'd 'cashed up'. Really? A train full of hungry anxious passengers, food on the shelves and they wouldn't sell it.

“Great trip”

Great trip worth doing. Scenery absolutely stunning. There had been snow on the return trip so was really scenic. The food and coffee on train OK.
