Owner description: The TranzAlpine is a long-distance train between Christchurch and Greymouth, from one coast of New Zealand to the other. Unlike normal passenger trains, the TranzAlpine is designed to provide a window to New Zealand's best scenery, with large reclined seating and huge panoramic windows. The spectacular TranzAlpine journey begins by roaming through the vast farmsteads of the Canterbury Plains to the spectacular gorges and valleys of the Waimakariri River. The TranzAlpine then ascends into the majestic Southern Alps to Arthurs Pass National Park, before descending through lush beech forest to the West Coast town of Greymouth - a great base for visits to Punakaiki and the always-popular glaciers. All services feature panoramic windows, reclined seating, GPS triggered at-seat commentary, a fully licensed cafe, toilets, and open air viewing decks. The TranzAlpine is operated by The Great Journeys of New Zealand, and runs daily throughout the year.

This is a very good scenic one day trip from one side of the coast to the other, getting off at Greymouth, its good if you don't want to go on any of the longer trips and the scenery changes so dramaticly from one coast to the other

Really incredible views await you if you choose to travel to the Southern Alps. I went when on a cruise around New Zealand; if you are doing that and this excursion is available, take it! Taking the train is really convenient. It's relaxing and you're allowed to go onto an open car so you can take clear pictures, instead of taking them through the window. You'll see cute sheep in the fields, flowers, gently rolling hills, high snowcapped mountains, and spectacular blue rivers winding through valleys. If you have the opportunity, don't miss out on this experience!

It's a whole day spent in a train crossing amazing scenery and particularly the gorges in the Alps, but it's never boring. We ran a little late and our turnaround time in Greymouth was truncated and we would have likedmore time there, but that was the only negative..

Travel on the Tranz alpine rail from Christchurch to Greymouth New Zealand. Beautiful scenery along the way with blue lakes and spectacular waterfalls. In December & January, lupins are blossoming everywhere on the mountainsides and along riverlakes. A few stops along the way to stretch your legs and take photos. Little cafe of pre prepared food and coffee to take to drink in your carriage. The carriages are brand new 2 weeks ago (December 2012) and seats are very spacious and comfortable. Not cheap around $300+pp NZD.Pre book online to guarantee seats.
Very convenient at Greymouth for rental cars right at the station terminal office. Speight restaurant across the street has good menu lunch. Bus is just outside to take you to Franz Josef glacier. Had a beautiful stay up the mountain at Franz Josef.

Recently, in July Last, we had the opportunity to travel on The Tranzalpine Train from Christchurch to Greymouth. I had been on this trip a few years ago in 1998, and wanted to see if the train was still as good. And, I was right, it was! This time, however, we took the trip in the middle of Winter, and the Scenery was Just Fantastic, especially Arthur's Pass, where the train stopped so as that passengers were able to get outside and into the snow. Our Children had a great time at that stop as they were able to make snowballs, etc; and have good fun.
Then it was onwards through the tunnel towards Greymouth, where we were able to visit a Local Restaurant for lunch. After that, we re-boarded the train for the return trip to Christchurch. We found the Staff on the Train to be very helpful and Informative; one of the commentators had been staffing the Tranzalpine for a long time, and was able to tell some great stories of the development of the train service, and past history. All in all, a Great New Zealand Experience; They say that Tranzalpine is one of the Best Seven Train Trips in the World, and having been on it more than once, We would all agree! -- Good Value NZ Rail!
