Owner description: The TranzAlpine is a long-distance train between Christchurch and Greymouth, from one coast of New Zealand to the other. Unlike normal passenger trains, the TranzAlpine is designed to provide a window to New Zealand's best scenery, with large reclined seating and huge panoramic windows. The spectacular TranzAlpine journey begins by roaming through the vast farmsteads of the Canterbury Plains to the spectacular gorges and valleys of the Waimakariri River. The TranzAlpine then ascends into the majestic Southern Alps to Arthurs Pass National Park, before descending through lush beech forest to the West Coast town of Greymouth - a great base for visits to Punakaiki and the always-popular glaciers. All services feature panoramic windows, reclined seating, GPS triggered at-seat commentary, a fully licensed cafe, toilets, and open air viewing decks. The TranzAlpine is operated by The Great Journeys of New Zealand, and runs daily throughout the year.

It is actually a trip I have made several times part way (to Arthurs Pass), but this was the first occasion I completed the journey. No matter, however, how many times you do the journey, one never tires of the ever changing scenery, which just keeps those videos rolling and cameras clicking.
Add to this an amazingly funny commentary (depending on who the host of the day is), and you have a world class train trip (of which I have done many), in the space of one or two days.
An overnight (or longer) stay in Greymouth makes the journey all the more endearing.

Initially I wasnt really looking forward to this trip but once on the train it was fine, good to see another part of NZ. My recommendations would be to take food and drink with you as what is on board is limited, spend a lot of time on the outside viewing decks and don't go there and back in one day as you only get an hour between trips....Greymouth has enough to do for 24 hours.

This is a great way to see the interior of the south island. We had a relaxing ride to Greymouth in autumn, and the Canterbury Plains and Southern Alps were lovely shades of gold and green. Also saw a lot of those sheep that New Zealand is famous for! Very funny to see them turn tail and run off when the train comes through.

We took the tranzalpine over to Greymouth and back in a day. The scenery from the train windows is world class. The train has open air cars to take photos from to avoid glare from shooting from the comfortable glassed in coaches. The train food service was quite good. The hour in Greymouth was just enough time to do some shopping and see the downtown area before the return to Christchurch. The car cleanliness was not as clean as European trains I have ridden, yet, the cars were not excessively dirty.

The train itself is very comfortable, the commentary interesting and the food okay. The vistas of mountains and rivers were fabulous, a chance to take some great photos. The viewing car was crowded at times. It was a pity there wasn’t snow on the ground to make it a real Alpine adventure. This was a wonderful one way trip to the West Coast.
