Owner description: See Kiwi in a natural environment - there is no glass! Get close to Kea, Tuatara and other native icons. Willowbank Wildlife Reserve is also home to introduced and exotic breeds. Make your own way around the park and animals will eat right out of your hand. Willowbank is open from 9.30Am daily - kiwis are able to be viewed from 10.30Am until close.

Enjoyable visit for the family, especially interaction with the various animals.
We liked the way that the reserve was laid out: it made it easy for us to understand the different animal groups.
Seeing the Kiwis was a definitely highlight - in my opinion the best viewing that we've experienced in New Zealand.

... pay the $5 extra for the Kiwi tour as it is well worth it! On your own, you are able to walk through several enclosures to see the wildlife, including wallabies, but the Kiwi tour gets you a well-informed guide and up-close visits with several of the animals including the Kea and the Kiwi (there is an extensive habitat for the Kiwi that keeps them in a time cycle such that they are active during the day).

We also participated in the Ko Tane, which was an awesome experience with some Maori, realistically recreating how new visitors would be greeted, expected to behave, and then entertained.

This attraction provided us with the opportunity to see Maori people in an old time village. We were able to actually see Kiwi birds up close and personal. This is a rare occurrence and as I learned many of the native New Zealanders have never seen a live Kiwi bird. We were favored with Maori dance lessons and entertainment and a meal fit for a king. This is one attraction that everyone that visits Christchurch New Zealand should not pass up!

The animals and birds are easy to get to and to see. The paths were a little wet underfoot when we went so best to choose your time to visit when the weather is good as there is not a lot of shelter.
