Owner description: Set in 80 hectares within 15 minutes’ drive of Christchurch Airport, Orana Wildlife Park is New Zealand’s only open range zoo. We get you up close and personal with the animals. Imagine hand feeding a majestic giraffe; seeing New Zealand's only gorillas; eye balling the magnificent white rhino; meeting New Zealand’s national icon, the kiwi, or travelling through the Lion Reserve! Over 400 animals representing more than 70 species are displayed at the Park. Regular animal feed presentations occur daily and are accompanied by a presentation from a wildlife guide. Visitors can enjoy the antics of tigers, cheetah, Tasmanian devils, monkeys, meerkats and more. Two large walk-through aviaries enable you to see some of New Zealand’s unique native birds and Orana is home to a wide range of native reptiles. Visitors can pet domestic animals in the Farmyard. Orana is internationally renowned for its involvement in zoo-based breeding programmes for endangered exotic and native species. When you visit, you are supporting our conservation work. It’s a full day of fun for everyone at Orana Wildlife Park!

I have been to this park several times in the past and everytime I see something new. This is a wild life park so don't expect enclosures like you'd find in a Zoo. This I believe is probably one of the best parks of its type in the Southern Hemisphere. They have several keeper encounters one not to be missed is the Giraffe one. You get to hand feed browse to several giraffe and its amazing. The keepers do scheduled publics feeds every day which have a usually come with a small talk and Q & A sometimes. The park also does several encounters that cost an extra $30 each. These include Lion Encounter, Meet a Cheetah encounter,Feed Lemurs and Feed a Tiger. Anyone of these is well worth the money its a unique experience and close encounter! I have done both the Feed a tiger and Lion encounter. The park is set out well and fairly flat to walk around.

I highly recommend the Lion Encounter Ride when you visit this park. You sit in a cage on top of a truck and get driven through the lion enclosure and the lions climb and sit on the cage. It's breathtaking!! And it is only $30 per person, so cheap for the amazing experience you get. I have never been so close to lions!

The park it self was also good. The enclosures were big and the animals had lots of space although I must say they looked quite plain and empty with not much enrichment for the animals. I loved feeding the giraffes for free, that was amazing! I also really enjoyed watching the wild dogs getting fed.

Over all, quite a good day!

Large park with a surprising variety of animals. The place doesn't get busy, and is well worth an outing. The price ($30ish) seems expensive, but there is enough to keep you busy at least half a day. One of the few places in Christchurch to see Kiwis (the birds, not the people). Worth arriving before 10am to catch most of the feeding times.

Orana Park is actually well worth the trip! I know zoos etc are not rated today but this is a wildlife experience! This park runs active breeding programmes to help endangered animals. You can get up close and personal to loads of animals and even feed the giraffees which is well worth the 15 minute waiting time. A great wee train to travel around on if your not up for the walk and the volunteers are a great source of information :)

This is one of the best Wildlife Parks we have visited it is well planned and is very interactive with the animals. Make sure you take note of the animal feeding times great to watch. If you are lucky the Gibbons will put on their show. Staff were very good particularly Brian the volunteer guide.
