Owner description: Set in 80 hectares within 15 minutes’ drive of Christchurch Airport, Orana Wildlife Park is New Zealand’s only open range zoo. We get you up close and personal with the animals. Imagine hand feeding a majestic giraffe; seeing New Zealand's only gorillas; eye balling the magnificent white rhino; meeting New Zealand’s national icon, the kiwi, or travelling through the Lion Reserve! Over 400 animals representing more than 70 species are displayed at the Park. Regular animal feed presentations occur daily and are accompanied by a presentation from a wildlife guide. Visitors can enjoy the antics of tigers, cheetah, Tasmanian devils, monkeys, meerkats and more. Two large walk-through aviaries enable you to see some of New Zealand’s unique native birds and Orana is home to a wide range of native reptiles. Visitors can pet domestic animals in the Farmyard. Orana is internationally renowned for its involvement in zoo-based breeding programmes for endangered exotic and native species. When you visit, you are supporting our conservation work. It’s a full day of fun for everyone at Orana Wildlife Park!

If you have a spare 1/2 day, this is well worth a visit, the African animals are housed in large natural enclosures and looked very comfortable, we were there at a busy time, still there were very few people.
The price is also right for entry and there are lots of places for a picnic lunch...

As there were only 5 tickets left by the time we reach the Park, my hubby brought all my 4 kids (9, 11, 16, 19) to experience the Lion Encounter (where about 20 people are put in a cage and driven through the Lion Enclosure. My family loved it, the lions climbed on top of the cage, were around the cage trying to get in or to get food from the park operators in the cage. Zoo-goers watching from a distance gasped as they hear the roar of the lions and how huge and ferocious they were!

One of the best activities we did in NZ. The zoo is quite a fun place, we slightly after 10am so could still get hold of Lion Encounter and Feed the Tigers tickets (min 1.4m for Lion Encounter & 13 years and above for Feed the Tigers). There is a big playground with flying fox (free) so we spent time playing and having a good meal at the cafe (yummy food!) while we waited for the Lion Encounter which only starts at 2.30pm (last activity). There are other free encounters like feed the Giraffe, etc. at different timings so do check the activities schedule so that you catch all of them, all are great fun!!! Also be early to buy tickets as we were there there before 10.30am and limited tickets left.

We visited Orana Park with our 9yo and 1yo. It was $60. We were given a wee map with feeding times, unfortunately the feeding times did not really correspond with the order in which the animals were laid out, so in order to see more than one feeding, you would need to go back and forth a fair bit. We did get to see the Lions being fed, which we did enjoy, The keepers are enthusiastic and approachable, and full of information - great for kids. The enclosures are large and more "free range" than cages in most instances, which is great to see. Sometimes the enclosures were a little too big (for the people, not for the animals obviously) and we struggled to see approximately 60% of the animals. I am aware that the park is largely funded by donations and volunteers, and sometimes this is apparent with the enclosures and paths looking a bit tired and in need of an upgrade. There was some bad cracking in a lot of the paths that I would suggest needs addressing, if you are looking for the animals rather than at your feet, there is a good chance you may trip - as all of us did at some point. The cafe appeared to have a good range of food, but the prices were a little on the high side. The seating for the cafe was tired and in need of some cleaning and updating. All in all, I would rate it a 5 out of 10. Probably a once a year/once every 2 years experience for us.

We visited Orana as a group of eight, two children included. What a brilliant day we had. Feeding giraffes, lions, hippo's was really 'cool' as the kids said. Food in the cafe was reasonably priced and very nice. Recommend a visit if you are in the area.

every couple of years for the last 35 years we have been taking our 5 children and now our grandchildren to orana park. It is a fantastic day out. Sure there is a lot of walking but that is part of it and you just have to pace yourself. We don't begrudge the animals their space.
The staff and the volunteers are fantastic and give great commentaries and willingly answer any questions we have. We all (and most everyone else) went to the cafe for lunch, no long waiting in lines as the staff are very fast and efficient. The only complaint I have about the food is that there is so much variety of amazing food I wanted to be able to eat so much more. And such good prices too. A huge pat on the back to everyone involved in Orana park. A great place to go with all the family, young and older. They also have a fantastic play area nicely shaded for hot days. Not neglecting to also mention the barbeque area for a great gathering.
