A ten minute gondola ride takes you to the summit and volcano rim of the Port Hills. At the top is a lovely cafe, shop, and time ride explaining the formation of the Banks Peninsula. There are plenty of walking tracks and you can always retrace the steps of the first settlers, walking the track over the summit Littleton to CHCH.

We visited around noon on a weekday in January and boarded the Gondola within 10 minutes of arrival! Only a dozen people in front of us.
The view at the top was beautiful. Definitely venture outside to have a look around the surrounding pathways and gates. Great natural NZ environment with picturesque views on a nice day.
Cafe has a good vibe. Service was genuine and friendly. Scone, coffee and smoothies were fine. Good food to eat if you’re hungry but don’t expect a gourmet meal.
I overheard some people complaining about the price to take the Gondola. I felt $30pp was fair for an enjoyable ride and to skip the hike up and down. They checked our tickets thoroughly before boarding on our way back down so if you’re thinking of hiking up and hitching a free ride down, think again! Gondolas are not cheap to install and maintain for safety. I don’t think this is a get-rich-quick-scheme for the operators.

Fantastic views, you really get a very good idea of Christchurch and the area around Christchurch. Nice cafe and shop.

We visited as a family of 5 on our first day in Christchurch. It was a great starting point to view the city and other bays etc. Amazing views and great photo opportunities! Would highly recommend it. Be warned though, they take a photo of you entering the gondola ride and as we exited when we said we were not interested in paying for photo the guide snatched it from our hand in a grump!

Went up the Christchurch Gondola this morning. Got a drink from the Red Rock Cafe. Didn’t do the Time Tunnel ride though but had a look at the view from the viewing deck
