Lovely walk through the park to the city, The rose garden was really nice with all the flowers out. Wide paths so even the push bikes aren't a problem.

There are botanical gardens all over the world. This place was not particularly exceptional but a nice retreat from the city.
It was clean, litter-free and well kept with some lovely flowers, plants, etc.
Museum is next door.

The botanic gardens won some brownie points off us straight away as it was the first place we found free parking. Everywhere else in the city seemed to be about $3 per hour.
Whilst we were there in September there was an event being hosted called Icefest. It was a festival dedicated to celebrating Christchurch's role in Antarctic exploration. The free boards and artifacts were great and very informative. Sadly a lot of the exhibitions and the ice-skating rink had a cost so we skipped those parts.
We came back again the next day and explored the many areas within the huge garden. Whilst we were extremely tempted to hire a kayak to go down the river, we stuck to wandering around. I liked the nice touch of the various sculptures, in particular the huge rose which was quite unusual. We even found a soft bit of grass to have a nap on.
It truly was a fantastically planned botanic garden with such a variety of different sections and I may even go as far as to say the best one I've ever visited.

Even with drought conditions this was well worth the time. We particularly liked the way immature trees were planted next to mature ones so you could see how they started off. The Rose and Dahlia gardens were superb and the water themed areas were very peaceful.

My partner and I really relaxed here. Even when it started to rain a little the gardens were still beautiful, especially the rose garden.
It's great how the gardens are all split into different sections, there are marshlands and a Chinese style rock garden.
On a good summer's day there's great picnic spots, a cafe, and a kids play area if you need to keep young ones entertained.
This is a lovely, free activity right in the centre of Christchurch.
