Even with most of the buildings closed for inspection or repairs following the earthquake, the Botanic Gardens are a lovely place to spend some time in the otherwise battered Christchurch.

We visited just about every botanic garden we could in New Zealand. We are rating them all a five. How could we not? They are all completely free, they are open almost all the time, they have beautiful displays of local fauna, as well as specimens from all over the world. They are generally easy to get to and have ample parking.
The thing that stuck out at Christchurch's garden is the native plant area. All of the plants are clearly labeled and the layout is beautifully done so that you can see each species in their full form.
We particularly enjoyed the Heritage Rose Garden which is located next to the Hospital. The heirloom varieties of not only roses, but other perennials, were simply gorgeous.
The herbaceous border was also notable.
In addition to the fauna available to tour, this garden is filled with all kinds of activities for everyone in the family. Maps are free and available in the i-Site trailer, located on the east side of the garden, near the Canterbury Museum.

I'm not a lover of botanical stuff but I have to say that this garden was actually quite good and interesting, especially if you like trees and brightly coloured flowers. I particularly liked the huge Sequoia, although probably still a baby. Then there was the highly unusual conical shaped tree which was actually "empty" and you can walk around inside. There's a visitors kiosk just by the gate where you can buy tickets for the Red Zone Earthquake tour which takes you behind the protective fences. Well worthwhile.

A great way to fill in some time on a weekend. A gentle stroll to view the flowers in full bloom adds to the enjoyment. So peaceful.
