“Grand finale to our NZ trip”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 11, 2013

We finished our tour of New Zealand with two nights at The George. We were getting tired when we arrived after a drive up from Dunedin but the friendly welcome and quick check-in soon saw us settled into a very comfortable room on the fourth floor. We were offered a complimentary juice, tea or coffee which was a nice touch but we had to decline the offer as we had to return our hire car.
Our room was modern and well furnished, with touchpad lighting and heating controls, underfloor heating in the bathroom and a heated towel rail. The air conditioning worked well and was easy to control but the towel rail was a bit temperamental and did not seem to work if the underfloor heating was on aswell!
There was a turndown service each evening and we were given a small bear gift and a toiletries pamper pack of body wash and body lotion on the first night which was a very nice treat.
We were advised to make a reservation if we wanted to eat in the restaurant as there still not many restaurants open in Christchurch following the earthquake of 2011. We managed to eat out on our first night but having ignored the advice on the second night had to make do with room service as the Bistro was fully booked. We ordered the fillet and ribeye steaks which were delivered to our room within half an hour and tasted absolutely delicious and great value for $38 each.
We had a late afternoon flight on the day we checked out but were able to leave our cases with reception and enjoy a walk in the nearby Botanical Gardens.

Dear Gwyndolen,

Thank you for your comprehensive review. We are delighted your stay with us was an enjoyable finish to your New Zealand visit and that our facilities and service were to your liking.

We will look into the situation with the towel rail and underfloor heating as there is no reason why these should not be working simultaneously. They do both have thermostats to stop them getting to hot so switch themselves on and off accordingly. However they should still be noticeably warm when on.

Thank you again for taking the time to post your comments.

Kind regards,
Bruce Garrett

Excellent welcome, friendly staff, good room. Good location near to botanical garden and less than 10 mins walk to the downtown area. We tried to stay here again later on in our trip but it was, unfortunately, full. This was, with hindsight, probably the best hotel we stayed at in New Zealand, out of 15 or so.

We had dinner in the Bistro, as being slightly jet-lagged, we weren't sure we could do justice to the formal restaurant. It was fine.

Really wanted to try this hotel. It was fully booked online, but when I called they found me a room. My overall experience was excellent, I would highly recommend this hotel. With the downtown area in ruins, this is a nice oasis. Very modern, clean, lovely service with super helpful staff. My room was ground level on the street but the noise was minimal. Will definitely go back to The George!

Room Tip: If you can afford, ask for a room above the first floor.

The George Hotel is located in a quiet area near Hagley Park and just a brief walk from city center. The George is a luxury boutique hotel. It has a nice quiet lobby and an excellent in hotel dining area.

The hotel has views-from most rooms. Unfortunately, we arrived very late and the hotel was full so we had little choice. If you can choose the park and city view rooms. Our room was a little small but quiet and had all the amenities. The hotel staff is very friendly and helpful. It is a great place to stay in Christchurch.

The city is still quite devastated by the 2011 earthquake. The tourist centric downtown is mostly shutdown or under repair. There a few temporary sites set up using ship containers that create an unique shopping center. It goes to show the ingenuity of the people and the possibilities in using containers in architecture.

I hope the New Zealand quickly rebuilds Christchurch it is a lovely city and usually a great place to visit.

From the ,moment we were greeted in the parking lot by Michael the concierge through check out our visit was perfect. This hotel is very modern. The floors and the towel rack in the bathroom are heated. The bathroom mirror is also heated so it will not fog up. Shortly after check in you are offered complimentary juice, coffee, or tea. All of the staff are very friendly and helpful. We had dinner in the restaurant and it was very good.

Kicked off our first night in New Zealand with one night at The George. We arrived early, and since our room wasn't ready they upgraded us to a beautiful suite overlooking the park. The rooms are lovely - modern, comfortable, and perfectly well-maintained.

Staff were welcoming, friendly, and had an amazing sense of humour. They gave us a lovely preview of the people of Christchurch (and New Zealand), and were extremely gracious hosts. They made sure we were comfortable and had everything we needed, including arranging for cabs and restaurant bookings.

Location is perfect - a short walk to the punting (rowboats along the river by the park), and the perfect location if you're keen on taking a walk along the beautiful Hagley Park. Botanic gardens are just a short stroll away.

We had a lovely breakfast before kicking off our road trip along the South Island as well.

We rounded off two weeks of rumbling along the South Island with a final night in the hotel, and had a lovely dinner at the Bistro (the sous-vide beef was stunning). Staff remembered us and took the time to find out how our road trip went - this level of friendliness and hospitality perfectly sums up the Kiwi (and Christchurch) spirit.

Room Tip: If you're there a few days on holiday (or if you've got a party of 3), splurge on the suites...

we stayed here for whilst visiting Chch and found it was a lovely hotel, lovely rooms but quite small, however nothing is too much trouble and we enjoyed our stay. Quite pricey when I compare it to our 5 star hotels in Brisbane, which are similar and a bit bigger rooms. The loveliest part was the first night when I found a lovely little teddy in the pillow called George which they offered as a take home gift, which was a really lovely thought. Nice hotel and better than almost every other hotel in Chch

Room Tip: they are double glazed so very quiet
