my friends and i booked a pricer hotel but our booking wasnt confirmed so looked on internet and found this, as we were just on a shopping trip. we had an absolute ball, its family run and you end up like feeling part of it, like fawlty towers without so many cock ups, the food we had was divine, eye fillets all round with double egg and fries OMG to die for, nice rooms and free internet!!! soo cool, bar drinks cheaper than in town which was a bonus. dont know why bad reviews maybe its changed hands?? im coming back with my family in summer so will review it again.

Our room was cold, dingy and smelly. It took several hours to heat the room - just wonder how the heating was set up. The receptionist took ages to check us in as she was not proficient with the booking system.

It has been awhile, but since I have registered at this site I have given many positive reviews so I think I should be honest about this hotel.

I was so upset with the service and rooms that I wrote them a letter of complaint after we had left.

The first night we arrived we were not happy with the room at all as the bathroom was filthy with hair and what not in the sink, and requested to change. They changed our room to the top floor of the 2 story buildings after allowing them time to make sure it was clean.

When we got there it was freezing and just not homely. No cooking supplies, we had to ask for a tea towel, and again the bathroom wasnt too tidy.

We requested not to be woken up - we were awoken by loud screeching at the door twice in the morning offering room service.

We wanted to use the internet.. each time the internet ran out we had to go downstairs to the lobby to get a new code.. couldnt phone up and ask. If i remember correctly they come in 15 minute blocks.

We did order a toastie as we were hungry, definitely not worth the $10 or so we paid.

All up, terrible cold hotel, with a very noisy heater, that I will never visit again.

We arrived in Christchurch on a Sunday afternoon (visa run!) and checked into the Pavilions. First impressions were ok, the pool and spa look absolutely nothing like they do in the pictures, but then you've got to admire the photographer! We were told at reception that there would be someone on the desk 24 hours a day if we needed anything at all and shown to our room. We were given a free upgrade to an Executive room as we were staying 5 nights which we were thankful for.

We went out to explore a bit of Christchurch centre, and came back at about 9.30pm, quite hungry after our walk and our flight. We thought we'd just grab something off the 24 hour snack menu. So we went to the bar to be told by a pretty rude older guy that we could have a toasted sandwich but he'd "have to get someone to watch the bar". The kitchen is located directly behind the bar, the bar itself is about 1.5 metres long, and there were 2 other people in the bar itself (both of whom seemed to be friendly with the guy, ie...his mates). We thought, fine, what's the problem then? He didn't seem to want to shift so instead we went back out to find something. Unfortunately everything seems to shut pretty early in Christchurch on a Sunday...it's more like a village than a city! We thought we'd get a quick burger from Burger King across the road considering nothing else was open, alas, by then it was 10pm and that too was shut.

We ended up going to bed with nothing to eat and no help from the "24 hour" room service/snack menu.

We decided that we wouldn't eat in the hotel after this experience, other than for the free "continental" breakfast which came as part of the deal. To be honest it's pretty dire.... a basket of toast (although plenty of it) which is your supermarket saver brand, a selection of juice and cereal, tinned fruit and yoghurt. It was ok, and it was free..... but at $16 per person which it stipulates on the menu, I would NEVER have paid that. We didn't try the cooked breakfast so I couldn't say about that.

We decided to go to the nearby supermarket on Papanui road in Merivale which is about a 20 minute walk and buy a few things to keep in the minibar fridge to make sandwiches for our lunch for the next few days, we weren't sure what would be around so thought this was the best bet! So we were thankful for the free room upgrade which gave us a few kitchen accessories, pots, pans, plates, cutlery etc.

Location wise, I think the hotel does well. It's a short 20 minute walk into the Christchurch city centre (which really is nothing more than your average home town) and to the Botanical Gardens which are actually amongst the best I've seen.

The pool is really not suitable for swimming in, but it's relatively deep and I'm sure would be welcoming on a hot day to cool down. The spa was your average spa, hot, bubbly....!! We didn't check out the gym or the sauna, but were impressed that they had the facilities.

There is a free 100 movie DVD library with 24 hour access by calling reception and quoting the movie number, which is a good facility to have. Some of the movies are a little dated, but there's a good range to choose from.

I actually think the hotel is pretty good value for money. We paid $475 for 5 nights with free breakfast and free room upgrade, so I guess that's not too bad. The spa bath in the room was very noisy, but it worked, and the room was clean, and the sofa was comfortable. I'm personally not a fan of electric blankets, and think this is pretty dated not to mention dangerous, but I guess it's cheaper than central heating for the cooler Christchurch seasons.

There were a couple of ladies on reception who were really pleasant and helpful, and there is a PC to use (which takes $1 and $2 coins) for those who don't have a laptop (they provide free wireless broadband to those who do) and there is also a laundry for customers to use at their leisure at a cost of about $7 for washer, dryer and detergent.

All in all, it was an average hotel. Absolutely nothing luxurious about it, but it is conveniently located, it has everything you really need, but nothing more. But again, they don't charge the earth so it's hard to be disappointed.

I'd recommend to anyone on a tight budget on a visa run! I wouldn't recommend to those who like a bit of luxury or who are looking for a really relaxing long needed holiday!

I had a fantastic time and found the staff to be nothing more than professional and very friendly. Not very often you stay somewhere where everyone stops to say hello and ask how you are!
Facilities were fantastic and very well kept.
The food was delightful and a great range to choose from.

I wouldn't stay anywhere else on my return.

We just stayed overnight without a car. The property is conveniently located about 20 min. walk from the downtown area (on Papanui Road, Christchurch's motel strip), with many restaurants 10 min. walk away. Our airport shuttle fare was reimbursed by the hotel because their shuttle vehicle was unavailable. The room was large and quiet, modern and stark but very functional and comfortable. Staff was very helpful.
