I stayed here for three nights at the start of my trip to NZ. It was very clean, quiet, (more couples seemed to be here than groups of single 20-somethings), and comfortable. Great fire burner in the communal lounge. Probably better if you have your own transport, as its a tad far out of town, but the bus takes just 20 mins or so to get to the CBD. The only reason I didn't score the lodge higher is because cost-wise you could stay closer to the centre for a very similar price. But overall its a good place, and I did recommend it to my friend, who also stayed a night there as a result. The lodge also have a good green/eco policy (which I soon discovered was common across NZ.)

We arrived after a long drive and were made to sit in the lounge room and fill in details that we had already provided over the phone it was very frustrating. After sorting out the papper work and paying we were showed around the place by the rude lady that worked there. We were given a code to the front door that did not work, if there was not someone sitting in the lounge room watching tv who let us in, we would have had to sleep outside with the worms n bugs as the receptionist put it earlier when we checked in. My main complaint about this place was the bed, it was small and the pillows were horrible i got a sore neck. Also the toilet and showers are right across from the rooms and all you can hear is a loud bang everytime someone enters/leaves their room or goes into the toilet. we got little sleep.

Room Tip: no rooms are good

I am so sorry you had this experience at our lodge - it really upsets me to read your comments. I just want to take this opportunity to apologize but also clarify a few points. First of all, we take your credit card details in person on the day you arrive so we are able to see your credit card and confirm it is yours. This is considered best practice against potential fraud. As for the code to access our property, we have not had any issues with this before and I am sorry you were not able to enter. We have an on-site manager 24 hours per day so if you rang the door bell, they would of came to the door for you. As for our beds, they are all new beds. Since we are a new backpackers ( we have only been opened for just over a year), we brought brand new beds and therapeutic mattresses. We would of been more than happy to give you extra pillows. Our private rooms do not have en-suites (which hopefully we make very clear on our website and our listing on Trip Advisor). As you say, they are directly across from the rooms for ease of access and I am sorry if anyone used these facilities late at night and awoke you. I hope this clarifies the points raised and hope you had an awesome time in New Zealand aside from these issues raised.

This hostel feels much more like home than a normal backpackers. The staff are super friendly and helpful and really go out of their way to make sure you have a great stay. The whole place is spotlessly clean and there are no bunk beds, just a novel approach to a dorm room. There are also twin rooms available and a lovely little annex with its own kitchen.

After travelling for three months in a variety of hostels - and a less than great experience at the Christchurch YMCA - this is the place to stay.

Stayed here for just one night, before picking up our campervan. The staff girl was extremely nice and welcoming. The dorm room was amazing, it wasn't even a real dorm like I'm used to but seperate units with two beds. The entire hostel was very clean and tidy. Everything (showers, toilets, couches, etcetc) was new and worked perfectly.
Just two points of criticism: our dorm-beds were no good, the bottom of the bed was like a pit so we woke up with sore backs. They only give you a voucher for 1 hour of wifi internet which you have to use up at once, very inconvenient. They should provide around the clock free wifi. Also, there are no computers around.

Haka Lodge is a new building with all the amenities that you would want from a hostel. The lodge was very clean with a beautiful garden surrounding so you had a nice tranquil feeling. The rooms were a bit small, the hostel itself is a bit small and the walls are pretty thin so you can hear quite a bit of noise from people in rooms next to you or above.

It is not a party hostel, which we liked but it is a bit out of town. Easy to get buses but a bit difficult to get good information from the 'office' for bus schedules, maps, etc.

Our flight arrived late, but there was an information packet and therefore no problem arriving late at night or early in the morning.

If you want to do laundry, I would not recommend it here. Your only option is to have them do your laundry for you for $7 NZD

Overall, it was a nice experience. A bit small and far from town but a very nice building with a beautiful garden!

This is a high quality budget accom. We had a private double with a shared bathroom. Reasonably priced, clean, flat screen TV in our room, lovely lounge and kitchen dining room, free wi-fi. Set a high standard for the rest of our trip around NZ.

We had a lovely stay at Haka Lodge. We had a 2 bedroom apartment to ourselves which was fully equipped (even with tea and coffe). We arrived quite late and there were clear instructions for us to get into the apartment. My only comment would be that it wasn't very well lit so we struggled a bit.

The staff were very friendly and organised a tour for us the following day.

It was very easy to get a bus into town as the bust stop was just outside.

I would definitely recommend Haka Lodge
