We are so glad that the small group tour of the South Island which we had booked with one of the big tour operators was cancelled because of low numbers!! John and Sally of Canterbury Trails cheerfully stepped into the breach and organized a fabulous private tour for us. We are a retired couple from Canada who have traveled widely as independent travelers but really appreciated having an experienced local guide do the driving for us this time, particularly on New Zealand' s narrow twisty roads. John showed us so much more than we would have seen ourselves, and through him we met many interesting people. He is gregarious, funny, unfailingly helpful and a fount of knowledge about New Zealand's fascinating flora, fauna and history. He must have been an inspired teacher. We loved everything - especially our visits to the magical Wilderness Lodges at Arthur's Pass and Lake Moeraki. We really should have made this trip twenty years ago when we were more physically fit, but John (and Sally, who organized the trip and was with us for the first day) found plenty of shorter, less challenging walks for us to enjoy, and countless excellent photo opportunities for Oliver. We highly recommend Canterbury Trails.
