Owner description: The Great Journeys of New Zealand operate three long distance trains and three inter-island ferries that take passengers across New Zealand in comfort and style through some of the most scenic areas of the North and South Islands. The Coastal Pacific train travels between Picton & Christchurch in the South Island. It's a dramatic tour of New Zealand's coastline between the Pacific Ocean and the breath-taking Kaikoura ranges. The Coastal Pacific journeys through 22 tunnels, across 175 bridges and past spectacular wildlife and marine-life. Coastal Pacific services connect with the Interislander ferry at Picton to provide onward travel to and from the capital city, Wellington. The Great Journeys of New Zealand also operate the Northern Explorer (previously the Overlander) between Auckland and Wellington, and the TranzAlpine between Christchurch and Greymouth.

Only travelled as far as Kaikoura from Picton but totally enjoyed the views and the chance to sit back and relax. Friendly canteen staff.

we travelled on here to picton, although we were held up for 1 hour by another train, we were kept well informed of the delay. the journey itself was great and the ocean views majestic. the staff on board could do with learning some manners and a smile from the tranz alpine staff.the carriages are comfy and the cafeteria well equipped

We booked the Northern Explorer, InterIslander Ferry, Coastal Pacific and TranzAlpine trains for our first foray into New Zealand.

The Coastal Pacific is a nice train with comfortable seats, large picture windows, a good food service car and with an open-sided "observation" car.

Check-in at the train station in Picton was easy. Luggage is tagged and left in the station - it is put on the baggage car for you.

The train climbs out of Picton through picturesque scenery and then races across farmland and ranches on its way to the coast. The trip down the coast was very scenic.

The open observation car is easily the best thing about the train. You can spend as much or as little time time there as you want and it gives you a more up-close view of the passing scenery - and enhances photo opportunities.

In Christchurch there is a very orderly and civilized procedure for picking up your luggage (unlike at Wellington).

On this train our windows were clean from the beginning of the trip. We thoroughly enjoyed the Coastal Pacific.

Our arrival into Christchurch was about an hour late.

Hagley Park is the perfect antidote to city stress. We spent time there every day of of our 5 day visit.
