We went there on a Saturday to check the Farmers Market. It's small but full of organic, tasty treats. Local farmers sell their cheese, sausages, vegetables, breads etc. It's hard to choose what to eat. Everything seems so yummy. We had a nice cup of fresh coffee, fruit cake, soup and hot dog while enjoying a nice view of the creek. Riccarton House was closed so we went to the bush - a nice small forest with a couple of tracks. Perfect for burning the extra calories we got from the market.
Thank You for your feedback. Next time you are here come on a tour. We have guided house tours on Sundays at 11.00 am and 2.00pm and Monday to Friday at 2.00pm. It is an hour well spent .
A group of 15 booked in for a tour of Riccarton House. What an interesting place, beautiful old building with lots of history about some of the first settlers, and their amazing journey to a new country on the other side of the world. Their forethought in saving part of the natural bush that covered their land. So future generations can wander through Dean's Bush and enjoy the tranquillity and bird life today right in the middle of a busy shopping area in Riccarton Christchurch.
We are so pleased you had a good time. We think it is a pretty special plave.
The Saturday Farmer's Market is held at the Riccarton Bush every Saturday from 9am till noon. You can grab cheap -and delicious- eats, homemade soup, Italian pastries, a cup of Chai, veggies, burgers and so on! The setting of the market is quite beautiful, just next to an old and big Victorian House...definitely worth it.
If you like heritage homes, Riccarton is a stunning example. Beautifully curated, it is as if the family have just popped out to let you have a look at the house. Our guide, 82 year old John, was knowledgeable, interesting and full of fantastic anecdotes. The demonstration of kitchen equipment was a first! I would highly recommend this on a trip to Christchurch.
Saturday mornings you can find a good selection of fresh fruit, vegetables and a variety of food stalls, from coffee to flash porridge. Not cheap, but a very pleasant setting (obviously weather-dependant).
This is a a local place for friends who live close by and is a real gem where they frequently have lunch. It was once a grand house and now, with the original little pioneer house restored, its setting on the Avon, the park-like grounds and the native bush reserve, it is really a magical setting on 12 hectares. It is hard to imagine the centre of the city is barely 3.5 km away. The bush is original and has some large, Kahikatea trees at least 600 years old. It is a remnant of a flood-plain forest, which has been around some 3000 years so, truly an amazing site within the city limits.
The cafe/restaurant serves seasonal food and is really good, healthy and interesting and perfect with a local wine!
The house has beautiful wooden panelling and has stepped wonderfully and elegantly into its role as a place to have lunch, coffee and even functions. Well worth a visit for many reasons.
