Owner description: Arthur's Pass Hiking & TranzAlpine one day tour from Christchurch. Where else can you do all this in one day and be back in time for dinner? A ride on the world famous TranzAlpine, a guided walk in Arthur’s Pass National Park and the amazing Great Alpine Highway. This will be one of the best days of your New Zealand trip!
Reviewed March 26, 2012

We started the day with a pick up from our motel by John. He dropped us off at the TranzAlpine train. We had a beautiful train ride up to Authur's Pass where he met us with and took us on a great hike with a stop at a stream for a nice lunch. I am not a hiker, but a walker. He was a great teacher and showed me how to correctly use my hiking poles and made what would have been a challenging hike into something I could manage. He made my day.

Go to Christchurch! The earthquakes have meant that businesses are floundering, especially tourist-related ones. Three of us were privileged to get Andrew Wells as our guide for the entire day up into the mountains at Arthur's Pass. The train wasn't working that day, so he drove us both ways. Gloriously informative on all subjects NZ and also (if you're interested) able to speak Japanese, Andrew did a brilliant job on us. We could even borrow waterproofs for the rainy walk in the temperate rainforest. Nothing too much trouble, and organised like clockwork even to picking us up round the back of our house. Andrew and his company deserve to prosper, but it could be difficult if nobody goes to that area. As a matter of fact, as a separate trip we also had a very interesting personal tour of Christchurch by a young lady with poodles and a pink open-top stretch limo - all these locals were delighted to have us visiting. Most things in ChCh are unaffected and undamaged - they are open for business, andthey are doing a good job!

We chose this trip for our first full day in New Zealand before we took to the road and it was one of the best choices we made. Everything was perfectly organised and arranged exactly as described on the website from Andrew collecting us from our hotel and seeing us onto the Tranzalpine Express to driving us back to our hotel in the evening.
The train journey was a wonderful way to see the scenery and the walk was lovely, Andrew ensured that everybody was equipped providing waterproofs, hiking poles and anything else he felt may help. Andrew pointed out so many interesting things and was able to tell us so much about the trees, plants, flowers and birds and we loved meeting our first keas.
The mountain views were amazing, the river water crystal clear and the pace just right. We have to mention that the packed lunch was just great and we also stopped for afternoon tea. Later we had a lovely drive back to Christchurch crossing the Canterbury Plains with Andrew stopping and pointing out scenes of interest as we went.
We shared our day with another couple and despite our having little shared language Andrew's fluent Japanese ensured that we all got on extremely well and somehow managed to have an easy rapport and we shared many humorous exchanges.
He was very pleasant to spend the day with, organised and yet easy at the same time, and we found his information so useful as we spent the following month touring both islands. We absolutely loved New Zealand and our day with Andrew couldn't have given our trip a better start. If you're visiting the area don't miss this trip, it's well worth it.

Kia Ora Andrew! We had a memorable and wonderful hiking experience in Bealey Valley with you. You were knowledgeable with regards to the local flora and fauna, and was friendly and helpful throughout the hike. The scenery amidst the temperate rainforests of beech trees covered with myriads of mosses, lichen and fungi is truly magical. Along the hike we had to walk past a few rivers with clear and cold running water gushing over and along smooth boulders and rocks. We even walked through a clearing in the rainforest which was covered in tussock grass moving so ever gracefully in the wind. This hike is not overly difficult and is suitable for most people with average fitness. We also had sumptous sandwiches, mince pie and warm tea at the end of the hike. Highly recommended and a truly 100% Pure New Zealand experience!

What a great way to spend a sightseeing day out of Christchurch - A trip on the TRANSALPINE and a hike to the base of MT ROLLESTON - WOW!!!!

The weather was absolutely PERFECT, with the first dusting of snow on the peak. The air was fresh and sweet as was the water in the river. The scenery was simply exquisite.

Andrew took great care to ensure that we were all fairly well grouped together, that none of us had gone astray and that everyone was well fed.

Andrew said it would be a BIG day if we saw 2 or 3 birds in the bush, but it ended up being a HUMUNGOUS day as we saw just over a dozen birds, with some of them seeming curious enough to follow us part of the way.

Andrew's knowledge of the flora and fauna was great and he had some little flip books for those of us who were interested and wanted to know a little more.

It was a really nice touch after we had finished the hike, and given it was such a warm day, to sit down for a refreshingly cold NZ ale in Arthurs Pass before we started our trip back to Christchurch. (If it had been cold, no doubt a nice hot coffee would have done the trick)

What a great way to experience some of the pristine wonders that the South Island of NZ has to offer.

If you are considering a hike, don't be afraid to use some walking poles. Andrew has them available. We each used 2 and found them excellent for certain parts of the track. It wasn't a difficult hike, but make sure you strap any previous weak joints to make sure you don't miss out in any way.

Make sure you have a hat and spare batteries for your camera etc.

It would be great to do another hike with the guys again sometime in the future.

You'll thoroughly enjoy your day out, we did.
