We stayed at Dorset House backpackers on arrival to New Zealand, and again before departing. The beds and room was most importantly warm - while the outside temp was 3 degrees and frosty. The kitchen was well-equipped, it was quiet, despite having many guests, and having 3 bathrooms with lovely warm showers (and hairdryers!) to choose from upstairs meant never having to wait. Good location considering the earthquake damage to the rest of the city, and there's a fantastic cafe called Vic's a short stroll away in Victoria St. Would definitely stay again.

My husband & I stayed here for 1 night whilst waiting for a flight to Melbourne. We stayed in a small double room which had shared bathroom facilities.

The staff were extremely friendly and helpful including holiding our bags after our checkout for our late night flight. The room was small and basic, and we found the shared bathroom facilities to be adequate for our needs for one night. The house is on the edge of the beautiful park and provided a good base for our quick visit. We were able to walk everywhere from here. The bus stop for the regular public bus to and from the airport is only one street away which was very convienient. Considering how the whole CBD is in red zone this place was good value for money compared to other accomodation options which were very expensive in comparison.

Having not stayed in any hostels before, this was a decent experience and one we would pass onto others looking for low priced 'backpacking' accomodation.

Beautiful house and its a ok place to stay. Got free internet and good parking. Its close to the park and you can walk to the city in approx 10 min (dont forget that many streets still are closed in the city center).
To bad that they dident clean under the bed then i complained that they said they do.

stayed here on a one night stop-over on our way to the west coast. We had just landed in Christchurch that day from Australia. We checked in after hours but the key and instructions were very easy to find. We stayed in a twin room on the second floor. Cute little room with view over Dorset House garden. Bathroom was across the hall which was nice. The only downside was having to lug heavy suitcases up the stairs and the guest parking lot filled up very quickly but there was ample parking on the road. The original city centre was a short walk away but unfortunatly still closed due to the earthquake. Hagley Park was just across the street, made for a wonderful afternoon walk to stretch those legs.

Hello, thank you very much for your review of Dorset House. That's great to hear you enjoyed your stay and found late check-in an easy process. We love Hagley Park too - it's great for walks at lunchtime. All the best with the rest of your travels, and thanks again for leaving us a review.

Kind regards

We stayed in a standard double room for 2 nights and a small double for the last night. We were pleasantly surprised at the standard of the rooms, they were almost like a hotel. Very clean and tidy, freshly painted, and comfortable mattresses. The small double was noticably smaller but still with room to move. Towels and linen were supplied. Bathrooms were lovely as well, with good hot showers. We didn't use the lounge (TV in the room!) or the kitchen but they both looked to be well organised. The computer with internet wasn't yet set up when we were there but they had wifi.

The only (very minor complaint) I would have is that reception hours could probably be a bit longer (the reception closes at 6 every day, but they do organise a late check in if you're coming after this time), and sometimes it can be a bit hard to find a staff member.

Hi,
Thanks so much for your kind review and for staying with us. I'm glad you enjoyed your stay and found the room and the hostel comfy and clean. :)

Our guest internet computer is now up and running and is available in the guest lounge.

WiFi is also available throughout the hostel and you can pick up a free access voucher at reception (or we'll leave it in your late check-in envelope if you arrive after hours).

I'm sorry if you had any trouble locating staff - we are always here, we just might have been working through the fun paperwork in the front office....if you need us, just hit the bell on the reception desk and someone will be right with you.

All the best with the rest of your NZ travels, autumn is a great time to look around. Thanks again for taking the time to review, we always appreciate it.

With best regards
Angela
