Description: Hans Herzog Estate is one of New Zealand’s most treasured, truly artisan wineries. Settled in 1994 in the heart of Marlborough within the most beautiful gardens Herzog’s offers casual luxury and indulgence for food and wine lovers. Unfettered by commercial considerations, the Herzog’s have adopted an experimentalist stance, cultivating an eclectic array of grape varieties all of them highly acclaimed wines rich in varietal character showing off the covetous terroir. The Estate’s iconic Gourmet Restaurant, casual Bistro, stylish Cellar Door and lovely Vineyard Cottage oozes European elegance and together with vivacious Therese’s and her team warm hospitality it really is a must visit destination!

The best restaurant in New Zealand! It is awesome, the best experience, excellent service and food. The building is very nice, beautiful garden in the vineyards. I have only positive points to say and you really should try the degustation menu.

We had read a lot of the positive reviews prior to eating here and much of the local "buzz" was very reverent toward this place, but alas, our experience did not live up to the hype. We chose the 5 course tasting (we had done an exquisite 8 course tasting in the US recently and wanted a little shorter dining outing), and while two of the five plates were very nice, the other 3 were mediocre and the portions were laughably small, even for a tasting menu. The quintessential moments were the 4 oz. wine pours (we chose wines by the glass rather than pairings since we had been tasting wine all day) and the ridiculously small portions of my wife's cheese course - about the volume of a NZ dollar coin for each of the four (there were only 7 to choose from). Considering the amount of excellent food we had at almost every other restaurant in NZ over our 2 weeks there, at a cost of usually less than NZ$100, the NZ$300 tab for Herzog was not money well spent.

We were really looking forward to this dinner and well aware of the cost. Unfortunately afterward we found ourselves asking "Was it worth it", the answer was no. Herzog is a beautiful winery, has a lovely dining room, and an exceptional staff - the food was what let us down. It just didn't live up to expectation. We ordered the full 7 course dinner with wine and it took over 4 hours - about 1/2 hour between each course. Each course was artfully presented, but very small. The highlight was the single mascarpone ravioli with bacon foam - delicious. For this price point, I was expecting "stunning food", sorry to say, it was not.

Be aware that when you are invited to have champagne and canapes in the lounge before dinner, it is at additional charge. This was never mentioned, and I think they should be more forthright.

This is my second visit to Herzog and it was without doubt THE best food, service & setting I have had in NZ. And seeing that I live here and have eaten at most of the best restaurants & resorts this says a lot.

We'd heard so much about the winery and the food, but didn't quite dare to hope it would live up to the hype... From the time we arrived and were greeted by the hostess, taken to the wonderful ambient reception area, had a glass of champagne and the tasty onion tart, melon froth and smoked salmon...we knew we were in heaven...

To be taken to our table, right in front of the fireplace was an absolute joy...the joy continued as course after course was brought out. The food was some of the best I've ever had, presented beautifully. The wines to match were nectar - especially the pinot gris which was unexpected as I've never liked the stuff before! It was my favourite of all their wines. The service was impeccable. Attentive, efficient, friendly - just right. We will definitely be back and will absolutely recommend you to our friends, family and business colleagues.

Thank you so much from the gardner, through to kitchen hands, waitstaff, chef etc.
