Herzog restauarant and bistro shut each winter while Mr & Mrs Herzog go to Europe and return with new kitchen and front of house brigades which are usually from Michelin-star restaurants in Switzerland, Austria or Germany.
Consequently the fine dining is first class, both for food and service, but the bistro (food from the same kitchen) is one of the best value for money places in the top of the South Island.
At lunch or early evening the garden is a lovely place to eat, later or towards autumn inside is OK.
But it's the food which is the star.
