“For that special occasion you can not go past this place.”
Reviewed January 10, 2014 via mobile

We needed somewhere special for Karen's Birthday, we travelled from QLD to NZ in search of that place. We stayed just up the road from Hans Herzog's so reading the reviews and looking at their website we decided to book many weeks in advance. We understood that required notice if there was diners that required special foods etc, so I guess the reviewer Steven B never did his home work and set himself up for a fall.
One point I must stress when reading these reviews is this place has two distinct dining options, one being the Bistro and the other a more formal type of dining this review is of the latter.
I go will straight to the end our dining experience, on reflection we discussed each dish which was the 7 course Degustation set menu ( another point for Steven B why go to a place with a set menu without discussing well in advance your needs) without the wines as I was driving and instead we choose a bottle of their Sauvignon Blanc. Whilst reflecting we both agreed this was one of the best dining experiences we have had in our 50 years travelling the world, I commented most definitely in my top 5 .
To the courses ok you pay $155 for the Seven but add to this the " delicate appetisers " of which we had three and the coffee and sweets at the end you could say it was Eleven separate dishes!!
The pre dinner drink with Smoked Eel , King Prawn and a Steak Tartare was truly Devine and really set the scene for what was to come , it was nice to have this outside of the dining area and in a superb environment, with subdued lighting and a French based decor. As other guests arrived they received the same treatment and it was lovely to asked one couple at a time to move into the restaurant, in which the decor seamlessly transitioned into a beautiful setting for our special meal. Seated overlooking a small garden perfectly structured and manicured with the sunlight slowly fading ( near to 8 pm ) the scene was set, our first course was Tare-tare of Tuna with a pan fried piece and soft shell crab. 10 out of 10 see our pictures. Following this was Bluenose fish poached with a salty foam, again perfect, the fish was soft yet still held that firmness to the palette. Next was the first of the three meats Lamb followed by Duck and then the one I was really looking forward to the Venison, what I can say, nothing was over the top, each element had its place on that plate, we even compared the symmetry and accuracy of both our plates and they were exactly the same. So much attention to detail, so much love and passion in the plating, real masterpieces. Actually after these courses we were feeling pretty full and with Cheese and Chocolate to come we began to wonder if we could get through all of them, but luckily the cheese selection is top of the range and you only get a small amount of 5 which provided enough to taste them, on our final dish or though we thought, the chocolate twirl and sorbets were, well what can I say they brought a tear to my eye, drop dead gorgeous, loved every mouthful.
We decide to finish of with a Coffee and was presented with a small plate of sweets, which we still found room to polish off.
This experience took around 3.5 hours, in which you were informed, talked to, treated special and the waiter knew I was driving so he measured out my wine to accommodate.
I nearly took a photo of all my dishes please have a look, I hope you agree if you travel and try different places you will agree this is a Bucket List place to go, I don't think there is anywhere in Brisbane that could get close to this place.

“Stunning restaurant and amazing food”
Reviewed January 8, 2014

Probably the best restaurant I've ever been to in terms of food. Went there for a work Christmas party and was amazed by the quality and presentation of our meals especially for the price as we had a set menu for a large group of people. Staff were very attentive and my glass was never empty. They also happily catered for some of us who were gluten free and vegetarian. We had a great night. The only disappointment was that the weather didn't allow us to sit outside in the lovely garden surroundings.

“Amazing dining experience in Blenheim”
Reviewed January 4, 2014

We enjoy touring the vineyards when we travel and Blenheim is host to so many wonderful vineyards.

For the first time we visited Herzog Estate early 2013 and what a wonderful surprise! The dining ambience is so special outdoors you sit under pergolas with roses and other sweet smelling plants .
:Pristine white, clean and pretty it is a wonderful romantic escape or a fun family dining experience. We bought a bottle of their wonderful sparking wine and dined with other families on a lazy Saturday afternoon. Our 9 year old daughter loved it, she could walk around the garden and was treated to a beautiful dessert which looked as good as it tasted.

“Short-Changed if you are Gluten Intolerant”
Reviewed January 3, 2014

Undoubtedly Hans Herzog restaurant is a lovely setting and much (thought not all) of the food is of a high standard. However, our recent Christmas Day treat was spoiled by a totally thoughtless response by the restaurant to one of our party advising them (3 weeks in advance) that she was gluten intolerant. No alternative bread; the gluten-free alternative to the breaded prawn was an empty space on the plate. Mirrored to a large extent by the lack of anything to go with the cheese plate (not even the ubiquitous New Zealand rice cracker). If you then add in the fact that some of the portion sizes are insanely small (two types of - admittedly excellent - venison consisted of 5 bites of one style and only 2 bites of another) at least one of our party went home feeling hungry and cheated.

At nearly NZ$500 for two (including the wine pairings of quite good, but not exceptional Marlborough wine - with somewhat marginal 100ml servings at times) I find it hard to recommend eating here. Their laudable desire to aspire to the top echelons of culinary quality seems to be at the expense of basic customer service.

“Probably one of the best restaurants in NZ.”
Reviewed December 22, 2013

Beautifully presented food;- each plate a work of art. And, generally delicious as well. Had the degustation menu with wines to match- the matchings worked very well with both wine and food enhancing each other generally... Started with 6 tiny "amuses bouches" - each one was delicious... really superb... Then 7 courses; - two meat; three fish/seafood, 1 cheese and 1 dessert.Chef clearly has real strength in fish/seafood generally - all these dishes were imaginative and delicious. Was less wowed by the two meat dishes... the interpretation of vitello tonnato (veal with tuna) was not as good as the "original" - the veal was too chewy and the deconstructed version didn't have the same taste/flavour profile. The venison was lovely but the strange green flannel like parsley pancake was not so good...
Excellent service. Wines very good.
Overall this is an excellent restaurant which would likely be 2* Michelin if Michelin were in NZ! Giving the chef the benefit of the doubt in the meats category - the rest was really good....
