“A bit disappointing - but still a comfortable stay”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 24, 2008

We stayed here for one night and were impressed with many aspects of the hotel - the bedroom itself was very comfortable and very tastefully decorated, reception staff were very pleasant and it's located very close to the town centre. As previous reviewers have mentioned though, the quality of the fittings in the bathroom was not to the standard of the rest of the room. Everything was clean and functional, but the contemporary, fresh fittings in the bedroom only highlighted the tired and rather shabby look of the bathroom. I understand that they're currently in the process of modernising their bathrooms - had they done this before our stay then I would have no hesitation in giving it an 'excellent' rating.

A very pleasant hotel in a town where most of the accommodation is in motels or B&Bs. There is a high standard of decor throughout and the staff were friendly and helpful. As the hotel only serves breakfast, they were happy to recommend some places to eat. Our room was clean and comfortable, with a small kitchenette area. I'm sure the bathroom could be made more spacious if some of the doors and partition walls could be removed! The hotel has a very pleasing exterior with a small, gated pool area and plenty of car parking. Would definitely recommend this hotel.

Chateau Marlborough advertises itself as luxury accommodation. Ours was adequate rather than real luxury.

We had a studio room that was advertised as having a full kitchen and bath. The former turned out to be 2 small electric rungs and a micro microwave,. And the latter was small and squashed into what at first we thought was a cupboard. The other washing facilities were adequate for one, There is a separate wc.

Apart from all the squash and squeeze in the washing areas, the room itself was adequate. Two easy chairs, one flat screen TV, and a workable desk. The whole well decorated and clean with good comfortable beds, linen and minor accoutrements.

The hotel has a small but rather cold swimming pool, is in a safe built up area within walking distance from the centre of town.

The hotels web site and glossy brochures are a bit over the top. We had a perfectly adequate though smallish well furnished room. We did not have the luxury studio suite advertised- and paid for.

The staff at Chateau Marlborough were welcoming, friendly and helpful. The room was surprisingly well equipped, with a kitchenette, comfy seats and a desk - more like a classy motel room than the hotel it was billed as. The bathroom had a strange arrangement with too many doors, which was a bit awkward but was usable. The breakfast was a bit of a disappointment, but we did go in after a big tour group so we could have caught them at a bad time.
Great base for seeing Blenheim and visiting the local wineries.

I booked this hotel thinking that it was as described - a luxury boutique hotel. Unfortunately that is simply not the case. The fixtures and fittings were lacking in quality and the bathroom was looking tired and in need of modernisation. Not sure which organisation awarded the 5 stars - maybe it was the Blenheim Tourist Board and thus they would not have been up against much competition as the other accommodation in town all seemed to be motels. Hotel was adequate, but certainly not 5 star or boutique.

  • Liked — The helpful manager made up for the shambles at breakfast
  • Disliked — The misleading representation.

Thank you for your feeback. In response to your comments our 5 star self contanined and serviced rating is Qualmark standards which is a National recognised rating. This rating is given yearly after a very in depth appraisal of the property. Our bathrooms are being upgraded progressively in the next 12 months but are still of a good standard. Our fixtures and furnishings in our suites are of very high quality.Thank you again for the opportunity to respond to these concerns.

The hotel is about a 10 minute stroll out of town. Our room was tastefully furnished in modern design and was made up of a fully equipped kitchen with dining area and comfortable sofas to watch the flat screen tv. The bedroom also had a tv. It would have been so much better had it not been a ground floor room from a privacy point of view.

Also, our Room (7) was next to the kitchen so we were woken quite early in the morning by activity in the kitchen which was a bit of a pain. We chose to walk into town to get breakfast rather than stay in the hotel – although the option was at least there if you didn’t want to make your own.

There is ample parking and a small pool area which we didn’t take advantage of. Good value for money.

  • Liked — Style and comfort of the room
  • Disliked — Noise from the adjacent kitchen

Great position in town and very friendly and helpful staff. Quite a nice little swimming pool with deck area for relaxing after a day's sightseeing. Room was spacious and comfortable and bathroom adequate. Breakfast was available to order by dish but it was just as easy to eat in town.

  • Liked — Comfortable, spacious room
  • Disliked — Breakfast room
