“Comfortable”
Reviewed June 8, 2013

This hostel was nice and the rooms were ok. A little cramped, but fine. The kitchen and bathrooms were clean, there was a ping-pong table in the outside area, and designated smoking spots.

Some of the staff were friendly, but the cleaners seemed to be grumpy and moaning about other guests.

Blenheim has a massive ant problem, so before you stay anywhere in Blenheim be sure to invest in good food bags and storage. The ants are not a reflection on the cleanliness of the hostel, they are everywhere! And this hostel is helpful at making you aware of the problem and suggesting solutions.

I spent 1 month and half in Blenheim (of course not because the city is nice, but for vineyard work) and I stayed at Koanui Backpacker.
It's definitely my best backpacker in NZ, you're really feeling like at home, people are so friendly, the staff is really nice and always ready for help you (they found me my job!!).
Each week, there is a shared dinner and a lot of others activities for spent lovely time with others guests!
I really enjoyed my staying here :-)

We were stuck in Blenheim for 2 months, but staying at the Koanui Lodge was the best choice for Blenheim. You get to know everyone pretty fast and as I said....after a while it feels like family :) the staff is more than friendly and helpful and the facilities are worth the money!

We stayed here for one night and were very impressed by the size and cleanliness of the twin ensuite room we had booked. We also use the kitchen facilities which where clean, spacious and well kitted out. Would definitely recommend it

Room Tip: Pay the slight premium for an en-suite room

The rooms and the furniture in this BP range in quality and size from poor to adequate. The bed I slept in broke in the middle of the night. I looked at the frame to find it had been broken before and then just screwed back together without replacing the broken wood in at least two different places. Luckily, the woman from reception was in the lounge playing cards with the guests, so she could move me to another room.

Getting into a toilet is an adventure since the toilet doors cannot clear the toilet (see photo). Showers were not a complete mess.

I have been in this BP on two separate occasions. Once to stay and I came back for something I forgot. During both visits, the common rooms and the kitchen were trashed. The drinking seems to start early and run late.

I needed to wash dishes in the morning to find something clean. The whole kitchen needed to be emptied and cleaned in my opinion.

The young woman who works there cleaned up the morning I was stayed but that wasn’t until 9:30. This BP is a party haven with little concern for those who aren’t partying or kitchen hygiene. The fridges seem to be filled with little but beer, which should be an indication of who stays here.

This BP seems to be run by absentee owners with one young woman in charge. It seems to cater to a young, party hard and long crowd. I talked to a guest who stayed here and asked about people leaving everything a mess when they went to bed. His reason was that most of the people worked in the agricultural industry in the area, worked hard and partied hard and didn’t have time to clean up in the morning. When I suggested they clean up before going to bed, he repeated his “I work hard, party hard” mantra and walked away.

Given the amount of housing in the Blenheim area I would stay somewhere else no matter what the price.

Room Tip: find somewhere else
