Owner description: Omaka Avation Heritage Centre presents the outstanding Knights of the Sky exhibition, featuring Sir Peter Jackson's own collection of World War One aircraft and artifacts. The story of aviation, its development and the men that flew them, is brought to life in sensational sets created by the internationally acclaimed talent of WingNut Films and Weta Workshop. The aircraft are a unique mix of originals and replicas, some of which are flyable and/or can only be seen at Omaka including the Caproni CA.22. The Centre boasts an extensive collection of memorabilia and these are divided into two areas, one devoted to the Allies and the other to the Central Powers. The Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre is extremely privileged to be the caretakers of these historical treasures, which include personal items of Manfred von Richthofen, the legendary Red Baron, top scoring Allied ace Frenchman Rene Fonck, top scroring American ace Eddie Rickenbacker, Germany's Ernst Udet ranked second only to Richtohfen when WW1 ended and the infamous Herman Goering. The Knights of the Sky Exhibition is a display like no other and you don't have to be an aviation enthusiast to enjoy it!

An *amazing* collection of rare WWI aircraft and memorabilia. Well presented and you could spend all day here and still not get round all the stuff they have on display.

“Really well done!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 31, 2013

We were expecting just a collection of vintage planes but this museum is more special than that. It has a great collection of original and reproductions of World War I planes presented in an exciting way with realistic models of the pilots and other troops in their surroundings. The display of posters from that era is also fascinating. There is a souvenir shop in the entrance foyer with a small cafe and on the large windows are photos and bios of the 13 All Blacks, who died during the Great War . . . This museum is well worth a visit - and not just for the boys in the family!

“A DIFFERENT KIND OF AIR MUSEUM”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 29, 2013

On a recent holiday from the UK to Australia and New Zealand, one of the trips we took included the Omaka Aviation Centre. The tour guide said " This is one of the best museums of it's kind in the world !" I smiled and thought 'We will see?'
Well it probably is ! Peter Jackson spent millions on the huge hanger housing the tributes to brave pilots of the First World War. From the minute we walked into the museum it became obvious that it was something special. The set piece displays of action are truly breathtaking, and the snow scene of the arcraft crashed into the tree with german soldiers all around was a particular favourite of mine. The shere number of display aircraft, some in flying condition, is awesome. We only had a very limited amount of time on our trip, not really anything like enough, even a full day would only scratch the surface. If ever I am in New Zealand again it is one place I would like to make a return vist to. For the visitor contemplating a great aviation museum this you should NOT miss.
