Although getting a little worn the rooms are comfortable and the staff very friendly and helpful. The massage after a piping hot dip was to die for. The meals are excellant with a choice of Japanese or European menus. We woke up to find the place covered in snow - absolute magic!

Room Tip: The bed in the Japanese room is very low!

Pure bliss. This is the ultimate retreat for couples. I wouldn't be so inclined to bring small children here, although some children might appreciate it.
I chose April 2012 as the date when i travelled as it wouldn't let me go back further, but for the record, it was actually 2011.
We got engaged the night we stayed here, so it has very special meaning for us. The perfect place to pop the question or just spend time with your loved one.
Plenty of bush walks nearby, some you would have to drive to. The staff are really friendly and can direct you to these. The waterfall walk is a good one, drive about 10 min west and it will be signposted on your left. Was about a 10min walk in from memory.
No TV, and no cell phone reception, which suits the atmosphere, techonology would spoil this place, it's a good feeling to be disconnected from the world for a while.
We enjoyed a massage each, which was wonderfully relaxing.
Each person gets free use of a traditional japanese kimono (dressing gown) and slippers, which you can even wear to the restaurant, making for a very unique experience.
Their is an array of natural hot pools which have a view into the mountains and valley.
Most of the pools are very hot, but there is a cold pool, which you can alternate with...very invigorating and a 'must do' at least once while you're here.
The food in the restaurant was delicious, as was the traditional japanese wine. Chances are, if you're staying the night then you're dining here, as the closest town is Springs Junction at about half an hour away and not worth the drive for anything but petrol. Maruia does have a few ready to eat snacks, deli type stuff to choose from also. We put milk in our little fridge in the room and just took cereal for breakfast in the morning.
A good chance of snow in winter, but this adds to the magic. Mosquitos can be a problem for some people, but we didn't find them a problem (in April) and I normally get eaten alive. They have repellant wipes in the room, if you wipe them round your neck and ears they should leave you alone in the pools as the rest of your body will be in the water anyway.
Don't forget your camera like we did...sorry no photos to share.
I hope this helps plan your trip, it's definitely worth it here, some wonderful R&R. Enjoy!

Room Tip: We stayed in a garden side room (closer to the pools) It was a quiet evening, although there may be...

No tv
No cell phones
Nothing but hot pools, amazing food, fantastic massages and peace
Awesome couples getaway, we will be back. Almost tempted not to write a review and keep it a secret
:)

There is the summertime issue of Mosquitos anywhere on the coast, and you might get snowed in over winter. But there could be worse things

We stayed here once before and loved it so came back and would loved to have stayed longer.
No TV in the room is great and no cell phone or internet was also good. Not for everyone I guess.]The food is yum, we both enjoy this type of food.
The hot pools are in a lovely setting and nothing nicer than sitting under the stars at night when it is pretty cold out. My partner had a massage but there was not enough time for both of us to have 1, he enjoyed it tho. The staff are all really friendly and nothing was a problem.
The rooms are a bit tired but really does it matter when the bed was comfortable and you sleep really well after soaking.
Definitely recommended.

What a wonderful place to relax and be indulged! I booked an Indulgence Package and was not disappointed with its quality or value. The staff were all so friendly and smiley, nothing was too difficult a demand. Our room was comfortable and clean - we enjoyed not having television. The pools were excellent. At first I think the highlight was donning our kimonos and sandals and heading to the private spa with river and snow-capped mountain views and wood panelled rooms. But then i remember the magnificent meal we had, and the selection of Japanese beverages, and the splendid massage in the morning... I never wanted it to stop! Will definitely be returning for a multi-day visit to have the opportunity to do some walks in the area and make the most of the relaxed nature of the place.
only minor negative was breakfast - not for value but quality.
There are not too many experiences like this about.

We just left the resort this morning and I regretted leaving because we had such a lovely time. I wished I could possibly have soaked myself just a little more.

We had stopped in on a previous trip through to Hanmer and wished we had stayed here rather than bustling Hanmer. So this time we booked an indulgence package to make the most of it. On arrival we almost immediately had our private spa. This is lovely, with a private room with huge windows looking out towards the mountains, which is a stunning view in winter with lots of snow about. Then we hoisted ourselves out for our massages. When we booked, there was only going to be one therapist working so we had booked separate times. However when we checked in the staff told us we could have our massages together which was lovely.

Then we had the meal, which was stunning. You had a large choice of either European or Japanese cuisine. We decided to stick with Japanese and the standard was great.

Rock pools after dinner. Neat experience to be outside in the cold, watching the stars in a hot sulphurous pool. I was dreading getting out of the pool into the cold and found that the concrete was warm in the changing room. Bonus.

My only little negative comment would be that I would have liked a Japanese choice for breakfast. The food was extremely good so it's only a tiny little comment.

The service was friendly, welcoming and efficient. The location is superb and the pools are great. Yes the rooms are pretty standard and maybe a bit tired but we just loved the whole experience. The atmosphere gave us the impression of a genuine Japanese experience.

We were travelling and just stopped here for a soak in the pools. They are natural and unfiltered and set in lovely mountain scenery. We enjoyed the outdoor pools, cold plunge pool and snow. But I think the place is a bit tired and two of the outside pools were on the cool side. So everyone was in a small hot pool. There are private pools but we didnt use these. The bathhouse is segregrated into ladies and men and dress optional. The bathhouse soak pool didnt look good with scum on top and wasnt warm enough. But the showers great, use three at once for best effect. It was very expensive for our family of 4 $76. And some work needed to be done to clear the very icy steps to pools. The cafe was actually very good. The sushi, rice balls and food was well priced and tasty. The restaurant is only open for breakfast and dinner and other bathers told us it was very nice. An enjoyable experience in the snow and a more authentic experience than the more commercial hot pools in Hanmer. But a bit tired.
