“Heaven on earth.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 11, 2013

We visited this location twice, once in the evening where we were lucky enough to see the most amazing sunset from the cafe. Then decided to return again at 8.30am the next day for a walk down to the lake. This was a magical experience, with perfect weather, sunny and no wind and perfect reflections on the lake. The walk to the lake is on a set pathway which takes you through the trees with birdsong to accompany you.
Free parking is available at the start of the walk by the cafe.
TIP-Watch out for sand fly's!

“View of Views”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 9, 2013

We heard about Lake Matheson on our Tourism Radio and are happy that we followed their advice to stop for a walk. Although it was drizzling and was a bit overcast we still enjoyed the walk around the lake. I imagine that it would be jaw dropping on a clear and sunny day. Stop at the gift shop!

“Great walk around Lake Matheson”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 4, 2013

So we didn't pick the best day for this, since it was a bit cloudy and windy so we didn't really experience the reflection of the mountains in the water that other reviewers mentioned. But, it's still a really nice walk and worth a short detour if your in the area. It's extremely close to Fox Glacier, so easy to do both in a day. The walk around the lake took us about an hour and 15 minutes, with a few stops for photos and the lake views. The majority of the hike is through beautiful forested areas along a very well maintained path, where the trees periodically open up to offer great views of the Lake. If I make it back sometime, I'm definitely going to try to do this walk again in the early morning to see the reflection of the mountains.

There's a small cafe and gift shop at the start of the hike that offered some pretty neat souvenirs and some good coffee.

“Heavenly”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 3, 2013

Just one word describes the lake matheson -heavenly ..we were lucky to catch the mirror image of mountains at lake matheson at sunset time ..when we had reached lake matheson , some people told us that they have come at this view point again as couple of minutes back , there was only fog and nothing was visible as weather was pretty bad that day ..but we were really lucky ...

“A step into the past”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 12, 2013

Its a short walk from the Lake cafe, but the walk from there to the lake where you are able to see a mirror image of the mountain range kinda gives you that feeling of " this is how god built the world for us" or "this is how it is meant to be"

Its quiet and peacful walk, like most parts of new zealand, but the fact you can see a mirror image of the mountains, without even so much as a ripple or wave in the water. Its like time really really stops here.

Its a great attraction, not to be missed. Hopefully like other parts of New Zealand, it will be here for a longtime, untouched & unspoilt by progress of man. Its nice to know there are still such places in the world.
