“Beautiful views on a lucky day”
Reviewed February 21, 2013

The loop around the lake is a pleasant walk with stunning views of the reflections of the snow capped Mt Tasman and Mt cook. However on a windy day the movement of water spoils it all. On the whole a walk hat even people with low fitness levels can endure. Good photo stops and places to sit in peace and enjoy the beauty and serenity in peace for the ardent nature lovers,

“Not exactly a walk around a lake”
Reviewed February 8, 2013

I don't know why this is so popular, granted, if you get great weather the views to the mountains are stunning, apparently. But it's not really a walk around a lake - it's a walk through temperate rain forest. For one and a half hours. Now, don't get me wrong, temperate rainforest is really great, and the paths are well maintained and there are a few signs describing the native trees. But the odd glimpse of the lake through these trees doesn't really qualify it for a lakeside walk.
The shop girl said I should have been there early morning. Maybe that's the answer.

“Nice walk with lots of information”
Reviewed January 9, 2013

No matter what the weather (which is mostly rainy in this part of NZ), I would recommend this walk to all nature-lovers. There is lot of information about the local vegetation at the visitors’ centre as well as all along the trail, and lots of photo opp.

“Awesome!”
Reviewed December 19, 2012

A beautifully kept track which runs around Lake Matheson. They have carefully positioned a number of photo stops, so that you can catch 'the photo' of Mt Cook and Tasman. Clearly, weather is a factor here, so the best you can do is head there first thing when the tours buses are still collecting their people and head around the track.

It is reasonably easy going, with some steps and some inclines / declines. They recommend 1.5 hours, but it can be done much more quickly.

Beautifully shaded by the rainforest, but don't forget the sun cream!

At the start / end is the cafe - a great place either for that mid-morning coffee, lunch, afternoon tea (or if you're early / late enough, breakfast / dinner). The staff are friendly and the food / drink very good.

Good facilities (bathrooms) and a gift shop too.

“Go in the morning!”
Reviewed December 14, 2012

Go around 8:30 or 9am to be ahead of the tourist buses! Best photo opportunities are at Reflection Island. Lovely walk. Great work by DOC with all the walkways, stairs, and platforms. It's rare to have a perfectly clear day, so hope for the best. We were lucky as there was only a small cloud at the peak of Mount Cook. We still got great photos.
