“The ultimate sustainable lodge - handcrafted, off thye grid, beautiful”
Reviewed May 19, 2009

Stayed here for one night with my family. Nancy and Grae - the hosts were the warmest, most generous and open proprietors I have ever met. They built the place themselves and clearly it was a labour of love. Their house is all charm, and the lodge is really well designed with the perfect combination of privacy and communality. There are small cabins available also (se other reviews). All toilets are composting except for one (internal) for night time use. Power is entirely from solar panels. If you are looking for an affordable, beautiful place to stay near Westport, this has to be it!

Stayed here a couple of nights ago, wow. This place is comparable to a really nice ecolodge anywhere else in the world. In Costa Rica they would charge $400 a night. Do not miss this. Stay in the "mountain hut" if you can. Like a little house of your own (minus the bathroom). Learn all you can about sustainable living (especially building/architecture) while you are there.

We stayed for four nights last summer, visited the glowworm caves, Westport, hiked a lot, and spent some time with Grae and Nancy who run the place. They are totally "off the grid", with solar power and hot water, composting WCs and a splendid little kitchen for making dinner. Great nearby pizza, tremendous walks along the beaches, and the starriest sky you've ever seen at night......... West South Island is amazing and pristine.

A half day's drive south to the glacier, half a day north to Marlborough's wine country, plenty of solitude, and the trip over the mountain passes from the main east island north-south highway make this a great stop on your tour of the South Island.
