“A great thing to do in WEllington”
Reviewed March 3, 2013

I am a Wellingtonian and thought I knew a lot about my city.... but the food tour showed me more. I shouted a good overseas friend a tour and we had a great time. fantastic food at Moore Wilson and we are fussy people. Coffee at Mojo was the nicest i have had in ages. the 5 bean blend was perfect. Chocolates at Bohemian was fun too. We we given 5 and I am now a convert of the Cherry chocolate. It is oozing with cheery liquid. Sublime. The honey tasting at the NZ art and gift store was somewhere I had never visited before in Allen Street. I now know where to but that special gift for my overseas friends. Floriditas finished the day off.
Our guide was knowledgeable and the pace perfect for us. If you enjoy gourmet food and want to try something different then give this a go. It was well worth the cost in my opinion.

“Sorry but this was a rip off”
Reviewed February 17, 2013

We just did the tour around Wellington and it was terrible. 6 of us went along and we were the only people in the group. The tour was 4 hours long and we were met by a German lady who didn't really know very much about Wellington but we thought that didn't matter too much as we were there for the cafe tour. We arrived at our first stop a coffee been supplier and during coffee we were shown how the beans were roasted and prepared. We didn't know it but this was the highlight of the tour. Next we were taken to a chocolate shop and after 10 minutes explanation on chocolate got 3 whole chocolates. Next a long walk to a local art gallery where after a sales pitch for the art 3 old and very used jars of honey were produced with 6 crackers. The honey must have been at least 3 months old in these jars. Then we were walked to a supermarket where some cheese and crackers were purchased and we then eat then in the store !! Finally we got another (1) cup of coffee at a cafe. Sorry but for $330 for a couple it was a rip off.

Thank you for your review, we are really disappointed and sorry to hear that this was not a good experience for you.

However this review has some inaccuracies and we feel strongly this the rating is completely unjustified, and so we do need to respond in detail.

We believe that this accurately reflects on the description of our Capital Tastes tour on the Zest Food Tours Website and the feedback we receive is usually very good, often excellent. It is our understanding that the guests on this tour did not book it themselves and therefore perhaps had not read the tour description.

Our guide has lived in Wellington for almost 20 years and is very personable, fun, knowledgeable and experienced (see the earlier review where she was guide on 18 Nov 2012 and received a 5 star rating). She shared with your group an introduction to the city, its important buildings and many other aspects of the city during the tour. Our tours are as much about food as they are an introduction to the city itself. She also picked up on the group’s maritime interests and made a special detour to show them Plimmer’s Ark and its maritme links as a result.

We’re pleased the coffee roasting experience with Lambros, the coffee roaster, and the local coffee, along with the Kalouria (Greek wine biscuit) offered was enjoyable.

At the chocolate shop, the guests were given 5 chocolates: 2 chocolates to taste in store and then a further 3 to take away. George, the chocolatier and owner of the store also chatted to the guests.

The 'long walk' to the gallery, is actually a lovely walk through the main streets (as well as a beautiful waterfront walk earlier up to the roastery), taking in lots of the city features along the way on this tour which is a walking food tour.

At the gallery guests were offered 3 New Zealand honeys, purchased recently, and guests are always welcome to have as many tastings and crackers as they would like. Guests have the opportunity to browse the gallery, only if they would like to. There is absolutely no sales pitch, rather it serves as an introduction to this beautiful indigenous contemporary art gallery for those who are interested and may only be in Wellington for the day and therefore appreciate a few minutes to browse while on tour.

The tour then visited Wellington’s best fresh produce and deli store, patronised by chefs and foodies, which has a fantastic range of locally baked breads, pastries, one of the best NZ cheese selections to be found, as well as fresh produce meat and seafood. It’s not on the tourist route and so would be hard to find if travelling alone and is a real gem for foodies. During the tour tastings included: 3 types of NZ cheeses (one can only be found at this store); 2 types of single origin pressed NZ apple juice; 2 types of condiments made by local foodwriter and caterer Ruth Pretty; NZ biscuits; Zespri Gold kiwifruit and 2 types of NZ crackers, all presented on a beautiful platter pre-prepared by the guide before the start of the tour.

At the final stop at one of Wellington’s best café's, guests were given an Affogato (an Italian dessert of a shot of espresso coffee poured over a scoop of the cafes handmade vanilla ice cream).

Guests were then given bonus vouchers for 25% off to a certain value at Logan Brown (up to $40) and Floriditas (up to $25), which I believe some of the group were able to use that evening at dinner at Logan Brown.

We hope this clarifies everything, we love to show people the best food and highlights of Wellington and continue to strive to make it a great experience every time.

Kind Regards
Catherine Cordwell, Owner, Zest Food Tours of NZ

“A must-do in Wellington”
Reviewed November 18, 2012

We did the Capital Tastes tour, and did not regret a moment! We had an excellent guide (I think her name was Annette and she was originally from Germany). We visited places, tasted coffee, chocolates, honey and cheeses, and found out things about Wellington that we would not have otherwise been able to. This is a tour with a difference, and I would highly recommend it.

“Zest Food Tours definitely has ZEST!”
Reviewed August 14, 2012

Upon hearing how food-centric Wellington was, I thought it most appropriate to do a walking food tour....and what a rewarding decision that was! Catherine (Cath) met us in the morning for a most inspiring tour of Wellington. We started at the Mojo Coffee warehouse where me met Lambros the coffee roaster himself and had our own private tasting (uuuummm cooool!!). Then we meandered our way over to Bohemein chocolates for some delectable goodies there. Along the way, Cath pointing out some fabulous clothing spots, eateries, and attractions. (We felt like we were in on some secrets). Then we went to THE COOLEST art gallery, Kura (where I later bought the majority of my family souvenir gifts), for a honey tasting. (Helloooooo even cooooler). The fun didn't stop there. Ha. We then headed to Moore Wilson's grocery for our own private tasting there (see picture). This place would be Martha Stewart's version of heaven. I mean I thought it was the bees knees, so I can only imagine what she would think. We finished it off with a stop at Floriditas for a lovely homemade Affogato. Cath capped it off with the recommendation to eat at "Capitol" -- which hands down out of our 12 days in New Zealand was the best meal we had. No contest. Cath is AMAZING and this tour certainly made me fall in love with Wellington and all of its divine little nooks. (I see a second home in my future). :-)
