“Average, could do better”
Reviewed September 14, 2013 via mobile

A few of us went here for lunch. The initial service was great and we were quickly seated and ordered drinks. My Caesar salad sandwich dish came without anchovies (despite being specifically requested) and another dish came about 5 minutes after everything else. It was all very tasty, just a bit disjointed.

“Interesting place, good food”
Reviewed August 29, 2013

Backbencher is across from the Parliament buildings, and is a politically-themed place where, according to the Parliament tour guide, some of the politicos actually dine and get into discussions with patrons, or sometimes meet reporters, etc. There are large satiric statues of politicians (fun to look at for foreigners, even if we didn't get any of the jokes), political cartoons all over the walls, and all of the menu items have names that are political gags. It's a fun place to go, even if you don't get the jokes as a foreigner), and the food is good. Service was so-so, but friendly. Worth a trip for an interesting slice of the capitol.

“Service lets it down”
Reviewed August 18, 2013

Dine here twice last weekend and on both occasions the food was great but the service was shocking. Ineptitude abounded until the duty manager took over and things picked up. Very well priced meals with a wide range of tempting dishes to choose from.
Would I return? Hmm, maybe, but there are other places I would try first.

“Slow & Cold Coffee”
Reviewed June 24, 2013

Stopped in here for a coffee with friends. Bored service by some tall easy going dude with track pants on. Coughed into his hands before he started making the coffees. Took 15 minutes from when we entered till when we got the coffees and they were delivered cold. Many people came in and left as they didn't want to wait as the skinny tall dude was the only one working despite several other staff hiding out the back. Sloppy - avoid.

“great salt & pepper calamari”

great to see the Backbenchers refurbished and up and running again. Excellent service, a welcome stop out of the wind as not much is open in central Wellington on a Sunday.
