“Cool location on a pier, food was good, but atmosphere of the room and service left something to be desired”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 8, 2009

We had a good experience at Shed 5, but not a great experience. The restaurant is in an old wool shed on Wellington Harbor, which makes the interior very large. It would be great for a large party or group, or maybe when the restaurant is a little busier it would be a good spot for people watching as there is a very large bar area. On the night we were there in Dec '08, there wasn't very much traffic in the hotel, which made the space feel cavernous and empty.

The food was good, they have a pretty large variety of seafood, but there isn't anything particularly local feeling about the menu, I felt like I could have been eating in any restaurant in any city in the world. The service was fine, if not a little slow.

Overall, this results in an average review for me. Good food, average service, poor atmosphere (at least the night I was there), and a relatively high price.

“Resting on its laurels?”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 10, 2009

We went to Shed 5 on 23 December 2008 because the other restaurants nearby were busy. The scallop and pork belly starter was pricey for $26 - the pork belly was delicious though. I had their aged steak for a main course with foie gras parfait, mushrooms, jus etc. The steak was slightly overcooked and a little fatty - it didn't have a nice crust. For dessert we shared 4 different ice creams - fantastic! If the starter had been a little more generous for $26 and the steak had been cooked better and better quality this would get 5 stars. For the price it's a treat but agree with others - there's better for the money in Welly.

“The food at Shed five is...”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 20, 2008

The food at Shed five is nice, but for its price you can find better.

We had scallops and seafood chowder as entres. The scallops were small but nicely done and the seafood chowder was good - nice and creamy with a slight hint of spice and served in a tasty baked bread bowl.

For mains I had some kind of Morrocan spiced tuna...believe it or not its first time I haven't had tuna asian style. The sauce and toppings were very good but not particularly Morrocan to me...it tasted far closer to an asian flavoured dish to me with little if no spice. Not bad but was it as advertised? The Tuna was crispy on the outside, almost like chicken...dare I say a little tough - give me an underdone Japanese tuna steak any day!! The other main was salmon...which was well cooked and (as always very tasty). It came with a slightly bizzare lemony artichoke flavoured salad that looked as though it had been inspired by the sea. I actually quite liked it. The sauce for the Salmon was OK making it a solid but not REEEALLY inspiring dish.

For dessert a warm cherry and chocolate cake - not the best I have had but pretty darn enjoyable - and a vanilla bean creme brulee with (not much) fruit crumble and some very nice cooked fruit. Another solid dessert performance.

The wait staff were fairly friendly (at least once I took my scruffy rainjacket off to reveal a suit) but were a bit slow early on.

The waterfront surrounding, revolving door, flash table settings, and wooden shed interior are great. Unfortunately some small details like plastic menus and ugly concrete pillars and light very slightly detract from the vibe. Overall very enjoyable but room for improvement particularly at the price.
