I think we come here everytime we visit Wellington. Why? Service is real good, Food is great, but mainly its the Ambience - its just very cool!
This time we were disappointed that we weren't allowed to have our meal "outside" when we have always done that in the past. They didn't have two of Beth's requested drinks - pina colada or mulled wine. But in spite of that we still enjoyed ourselves and when we went outside between courses the lady looking after that part ran around after us and was just such a nice person.
Not the greatest visit but we will be back because its Matterhorn and its one of the things we look forward to when visiting Wellington.

Had heard really good comments about this restaurant so decided to give it a go on a recent trip to Wellington. When we arrived we were asked to take a seat at the bar until our table was ready - the restaurant was by no means full, and it was fairly obvious that this is a good way to get you to part with lots of cash for the overpriced bar drinks. 45 minutes later we were shown to our table. The lighting was extremely dim, so much so that we used our cellphones as torches to read the menu! There was also a pervading smell of woodsmoke everywhere, so much so that when we left (and even the next day), we smelt like we had been near a forest fire! HOWEVER, these disappointments aside, the food was AMAZING! Small dishes of delectable tasting food, couldn't fault it. Price wise a little on the high side, but you really won't mind if you enjoy eating from a good range of beautifully prepared food. We'll definitely be going back there.

After rave reviews about Matterhorn, we went in for dinner on a Sunday night. There were about 4 other tables, so it was extremely quiet and slow. We thought it would be a perfect night for a good meal. We were seated and told someone would be right with us. We pondered the wine list, the drinks list, the menu and back to the drinks. No one came back. There were a couple girls standing at the bar chatting instead of worrying about our table. Everytime we thought someone was coming to serve us they walked right past. If you're going to spend a significant amount of money on a nice meal you shouldn't have to flag a server down. After literally waiting 15 minutes, we got up and walked out. Never once in my life have I walked out of a restaurant. The 2 girls continued chatting away at the bar, not even noticing. Another girl standing up front smiled and said bye. No one even realized what happened. Appalling. We went down the road to another restaurant and the staff was friendly and told us how they had heard service had gone down hill since there are apparently new people running it. More bar than restaurant so I wouldn't waste your time.

I recently arrived back in Wellington after being away for a few years and one of the first places I wanted to go was the Matterhorn. Glad to see that it's still as good as ever.

We quickly ordered the Yellowfin Tuna tortillas to start whilst we had a proper look at the menu.

The "King Salmon Textures" caught my eye immediately and I wasn't disappointed. It was to die for. What came out was a fillet of salmon that had been cured in something... maybe beetroot? It was beautifully moist and just melted in your mouth. This was served with toasted black bread and a wonderfully soft and fluffy salmon and lemongrass pate / creme. Next up was the Monkfish which was wrapped in chorizo. This was a gorgeous combination of flavours and textures, I think Monkfish is such an underrated fish and when draped in chorizo this is a killer combo.

The roquefort, chicory and walnut salad was a nice accompaniment but the two clear winners were definitely the salmon and the monkfish, washed down with a gorgeous bottle of Ata Rangi Pinot.

Definitely recommend and will go again. And again..
