The Indus is technically in Thorndon but this is just across the major freeway from downtown Wellington - a short walk behind the parliament house complex.

It is located in what was once an old pub and has a nice, though modern, feel.

The food was excellent. As we were with a group, we had a chance to taste a variety of dishes.

My wife particularly liked the sago vada as a first course - deep friend balls of mash potato and spices. Of the mains, I quite liked the tndori prawns; they were a little burnt but the flavor was wonderful. We had not had pershari naans before and really enjoy the taste that the extra spice and chopped nut added.

While we were there for dinner, there is a lunch special for NZ$ 9.00 which is a main and rice.

We certainly would return.

Made with real vegetables and tandoori cooked chicken actually cooked in a tandoori oven. this creates a fantastic flavour. sauces are thick and flavoursome perfect accompaniment to their light and fluffy naan. try the jalfrazi with a little but of spice. delicious.

We have visited Indus several times, but hadn't been for ages, so popped in for a curry after a visit to the Sprig and Fern down the road. It has a pleasant interior and we were welcomed in despite it being a bit late. It is a reasonable-sized restaurant with an outdoor eating area - I have never seen the place more than a third full (a shame, as it is better than most of the central Wellington Indian restaurants) so it lacks a bit of atmosphere. We enjoyed our starters of onion bhajee and sago vada (minus the yoghurt, plus mango chutney), followed by a (sadly) watery tarka dal and a very nice punjabi chole. The roti was perfect, as was the rice. Our waiter was pleasant and attentive. Indus is a good choice for couples, families, and groups of colleagues or friends.

The menu had a varied selection of dishes for lunch, including a good range of vegetarian. We had korma lamb, and something with spinach and paneer. Both dishes were really delicious, with the korma lamb being satisfyingly creamy and nutty. They were served with rice and roti, and I have to say the roti were wonderful - puffy and fresh! Most of the lunchtime meals are around the $10 mark, so it's excellent value.

The atmosphere is nice too, in an old Victorian pub building. The interior is spacious and light, and the tables aren't too close together. I'd definitely recommend Indus.

This easily located Indian restaurant should earn the epitaph of 'open all hours'. Open for lunches and dinner, the service is prompt and friendly. A spacious well appointed dining room, cool on a warm day with doors open, but equally snug and cosy when wellington's cool winter winds blow. The dishes are great, particularly the vegetarian, well balanced and spiced.

Takeaway orders can be phoned through and easily collected. A good local restaurant. Family friendly. Parking a little tight, but not off putting.
