“The fringe theatre festival is superb! Space b#tches rock!”
Reviewed March 1, 2012

It was only my second time at the Bats, this time for the Space B#tches comedy musical. This is a boutique theatre on a tight budget, and it's out of this world! The premises is everything it should be and the Pulp Fiction Puppet show at the adjoining Pitt Bar is a nice way to start or finish an evening, just be early seats are limited! Oh and tripadvisor I think calling B#tches profanity is a bit much, requiring me to replace the 'i' with a '#'!

“Lonely Hearts”
Reviewed January 30, 2012

We went to Lonely Hearts at Bats. we had three in our group and got the last two tickets and were lucky enough for our third member to get in on the wait list. FABULOUS singing. Great friendly little theatre with intimate feel because it's so small, so you're close to the actors.

“I love this theatre!”
Reviewed June 19, 2011

The grouch who couldn't sit with his/her mate didn't know that when the doors open you head for the seats. This is a great little theatre. The standard of the shows varies but I've seen some amazing things there. The audience is usually much younger and more interesting than other Wellington theatres. And it's cheaper than other live theatre venues too.

“Don't bother”
Reviewed April 19, 2011

Having taken the trouble to book ahead, and having reserved two tickets to a show at this theatre, we had assumed that two seats would have been allocated for us. Not so. In spite of being in the foyer at the point that the doors were opened for entry into the theatre, we were unable to find two seats together in the small auditorium. The best the staff could do was point out two very poor seats at opposite sides of the room from each other - not very useful for two people trying to enjoy a night out together.

When people book tickets to see a play as a group, it does not seem an unreasonable assumption that they want to see the play AS A GROUP. Booking in advance should, one would think, make this possible - after all, a theatre wouldn't sell you tickets to seats that aren't available, would it? And if your requested booking couldn't be filled, a professional theatre would inform you of that, right?

Don't count on it.

Bats ticket booking and seat allocation process leave a lot to be desired. If you want a night out with a friend or partner, don't count on Bats to make it happen - even if you have pre-booked. Try Circa or Downstage instead - much better organised and less likely to leave you wondering why you bothered. They did refund the ticket price, but we were left all dressed up with nowhere to go :(
