My fiancee and I stayed here early March for a night. We were blown away with the spectacular harbour views from our 12th floor room which provided for great evening viewing, while still feeling private.

We decided to drive in and found the parking easy with Rydges taking care of everything. A big highlight for me was the Portlander (the hotel's restaurant) breakfast which had an extensive selection of cooked breakfast options and pasteries.

I highly recommend Rydges for anyone coming into Wellington for a long stay, a short stay, or in our case, just a night away from home!

Hi there,
Thank you for writing a review of your recent stay with us. We appreciate you taking the time to do so. The views from our habour side rooms truly are stunning (especially at night!) and I am glad that you and your fiancee thought so too. Portlander Bar & Grill is often a highlight for our guests, so it was no surprise that you enjoyed dining here for dinner and breakfast also! Thank you for choosing to recommend our hotel. We look forward to having you stay again in the future.
Kind regards,
Kieran Wright

I stayed here with my partner last weekend and had an amazing night away with a beautiful room on the 12th floor with harbour views and room service dinner. The room was exactly what we needed and a yummy breakfast before our late check out. Perfect for a getaway and top service with nothing to worry about. Only wish we stayed more than one night!

Room Tip: Definitely get the breakfast!

My girls friends and I spent the weekend here in Jan for Wellington cup - from the moment we walked through the door we were spoilt. Clean and spacious deluxe king rooms overlooking the harbour was just what we needed for our weekend in the city.
The Portlander resturant downstairs was the perfect way to start our trip on the friday night with drinks and nibbles outside - the staff even bringing out rugs when it got a little colder!
After seeing meals go out to other patrons we decided to stay on for a meal - steak to die for!!
We were attending the races sat and the day started with an impressive buffet breakfast downstairs again and champange. Rydges central location meant we were within 4 minutes walking distance of the train station to link us up to the race course. on return we ordered from the room service menu - prompt and resturant quality.
we couldnt wait to get down to our buffet breakfast the next morning. A couple of the girls used the well equipped gym while the others stepped out for some shopping - best shops in Wgtn right on rydges doorstep.
Amazing weekend (wellington did turn the weather on), we will definatly be back Rydges you made us feel very at home despite our flash surrondings!

Room Tip: Over looking the harbour stunning views!

From the moment I arrived I felt looks after by warm friendly staff, nothing seemed to be a trouble. The room I had was great with amazing views of the city. You cannot fault the location, great for shopping on Lambton Quay, watch sport at stadium which is conveniently located also. The restaurant in the lobby (the Portlander I think) provided me with a lovely dining experience during my stay, both for dinner and I have to say one of the best buffet breakfasts I've had. Thanks Rydges team for a near faultless stay, I'll definitely be back whenever in Wellington!

Had an awesome stay here at the weekend. The room we stayed in was perfect with amazing views over the city! Staff were very helpful when checking in and bar staff were great in the evening. Make sure if you stay here you order the buffet breakfast, it is the best way to start the day. This was my second stay at Rydges Hotel and i would definitely recommend it to others!!

Room Tip: breakfast is amazing!!

Not sure where to start. When we checked in, there were no maps left to direct us to the self parking garage. Fair enough, things do run out. Wasn't impressed that the sign-in form had a "tick this if you DON'T want to get promotional material". The room was sub-par for what was meant to be a "Deluxe King Harbour View" room in a 4 star hotel. Noise from both outside (mostly coming through the window mounted air conditioner - you'd think there would be internal aircon, but no) and the what must be paper thin walls was evident even at first. You could clearly hear the people walking both in the room next door and the corridor outside. Not sure what they were thinking with the badly fitted cheap looking roller blind on the piece of glass between the bathroom and the bed when a wall would be better suited. The bathroom wasn't properly cleaned either - splash marks on the tiles at the back of the toilet aren't a good look.

After finally getting to sleep despite hearing everything that was going on, we had a lovely Saturday morning 6:30am wakeup call courtesy of the generator running on the construction site next door - not something that the hotel had any control of, but at 7 floors up, there should have been far less noise.

Then to breakfast. Got into line only to be told with all the other people there that we'd have to wait 20-30 minutes for a table. Despite the fact that there were several empty tables set for 4 people everywhere. At 9:30am this is simply unacceptable for any hotel of this reputed quality. After complaining to reception about this (along with several other couples), tables magically appeared (I guess it doesn't take 20-30 minutes to move tables apart). It meant little - the place was completely disorganised and food was sparse on the ground. And I've read several responses to negative reviews here stating that the food is a reason people come to the place - not in our experience. It's a bog standard buffet breakfast, nothing more. Complete with hash browns that had so much garlic in them as to be inedible, and made to order omelettes that were runny.

The 2nd night (thankfully the last) was even noisier. After ringing up to complain about the party ongoing in the adjoining room at midnight, I was called back to be told that the visitors in the room "had the right to be there". Not sure what that was meant to mean, and honestly I couldn't care less if they are allowed to be there or not when I'm complaining about noise (and it wasn't just normal talking, etc, it was a full on drunken party, complete with banging on the wall after they'd obviously been told where the complaint came from). It took another call before the situation was rectified, around 1am. That was topped off by a Sunday 7am generator wakeup.

One last thing is the quality of service, the little things. On our walks around the city, we noticed that many of the roads in the city would be closed off due to the around the bays run. No real issues in that, but this is something that wasn't told or mentioned when we checked in, or when we checked out. For a decent quality hotel, with lots of people heading to the airport along many of these roads, this should be something that should be advertised in the hotel, or advised by staff as a courtesy. Simply not good enough - I suspect some people were caught out by the extra half an hour it took them to get to the airport.

Oh, and 20 minutes free internet, how generous. Was the only place in our 2 week stay that didn't include a good quantity of wifi access. Have read responses to this criticism here that other hotels don't offer this in Wellington as a rule. Stop using this sorry excuse and catch up to the rest of your country and the world.

Couldn't recommend this hotel to anyone.
