I stayed here for 2 nights. This is the review:

1. Rooms: Good, comfortable, spacious, ample bathroom, good kitchenette facilities, nice bedding, and beds. Decent flat screen and enough cable channels.

2. Location: more suitable for business than tourism. Walking distance to Parliament, Courts, Lambton Quay, and all key administrative buildings in Wellington. So if you are in Wellington on business it is perfect. If you are a plain tourist, it will still do for you as Wellington is a very small city and you can walk the whole CBD and back in 30 minutes. You are just 5 minutes from the waterfront and its restaurants. The hotel proper is on Featherston street which is also a good place to be (but be aware that after 5 pm except Courtney Place Wellington is a desolated place, there is hardly any escape from that in bucolic Wellington).

3. Facilities: Gym and lap pool are pretty modest. But they are usable if necessary.

4. Hidden charges: There is NO justification for the hotel to charge you $20 for 24 hour internet (or $6 for a single hour). Business travelers (and tourists too) need internet access as much as water or a bathroom. So this abusive confiscatory charge is a hidden cost which you will have no choice but to pay increasing your room costs considerably. Like Australian hotels (and unlike most hotels in Europe, Asia, and North and South America) NZ hotels resort to price gouging for internet services. If a Paris hotel doesn't charge it, a Wellington shouldn't either. So try to negotiate a better internet rate before booking or go elsewhere where they do. Perhaps the Rydges manager will learn that overcharging customers for internet is bad business and certainly bad manners. If they don't charge you for watching TV, why should they charge you other than the basic cost of internet service?

Another hidden charge is valet parking. There is no option but valet parking or nothing. $30 a night for Wellington is seriously abusive and ridiculous and you can get better prices by yourself outside the hotel (I parked at $3 a night a couple of blocks from the hotel) Again, the Rydges manager should learn that parking is a service not a profit centre when it comes to accommodating customers that arrive by car. $30 is scandalous in a city like Wellington.

So the hotel is good, and appropriate, but if you have a car and/or need to use the internet try to get a better deal elsewhere or you will be looking at another $50 a day to your bill.

Thank you for your thoughts, great to hear you enjoyed your stay with us! Wellington is nicely compact, so our location is great for all types of visitors whether it be for business or leisure. The waterfront, Cuba Street and Courtney Place are all popular spots after 5pm, so when you are next in town be sure to venture to these areas too. The costs regarding the internet and parking are both comparative to the Wellington hotel marketplace, we have done our research locally to find we are well placed. Thank you for raising these points with us, we do take all feedback seriously and look at this for future changes to the way we do things here at Rydges Wellington.

Hi there, thanks for your review, just wanted to point out that the $15 beer you are speaking of is a 500mL New Zealand Craft beer, which is the standard price for this type of beer. We do offer standard beers at a price of $8. We pride ourselves on being a great hotel with great staff and facilities, and feel that we are much more than a place to put your head down.

We stayed at Ridges in Wellington for two night. When we arrived we were very pleasantly surprised. However this soon turned to disappointment. We opened the fridge to discover the previous occupants left over ice cream and the bins not emptied. We could handle that but not the shower recess clogged with hair. That was just the start. We decided to take a walk through the city. In an attempt to think ahead we switched the air conditioner on so we would a lovely room to return to. We arrived back to discover that the system had broken down. We brought this to the front desks attention. A gentleman was soon at our door. The advice we received was switch it off and reset it. We did this. We then repeated this process every two hours throughout the night. We then reported this to the desk again. Instead of offering a different room the response we got was thank you! On leaving the accommodation the girl at reception was so distracted with having fun and games with another staff member she forgot to take our room key. Only for my own observation did ridge get their key back. This was suppose to be a romantic weekend away which turned into a weekend of complaining with no assistance. VERY DISAPPOINTING!

Hi there,

Disappointing to read what went from a great arrival to some things letting your stay down. The Rooms Division Manager at the hotel has been given this review to discuss with the particular departments, what I would like to know from you is what room number you stayed in and the dates of your stay. If you could please email me on chelsea_laing@rydges.com I would like to do a more thorough investigation of your issues faced during your time at Rydges Wellington. I am sorry that your romantic weekend away left you disappointed and would like to make it up to you to change your opinion of us, so please get in touch asap.

We had the chance to stay here again recently. The room was lovely, nice and clean and suited our requirements. Great to see that they have placed a screen over the glass between the bathroom and living area. The front staff were excellent in accommodating our needs for extra rooms.
My only complaint would be that the housekeeping staff knocked on our door at 8.30am to service our room - a bit early!

The late check out was a real bonus for us.

Hi there, thanks for your feedback, sounds like a fantastic experience here at Rydges Wellington. The screen was one of the first things on the list to add to our rooms, great to hear of the positive response to our change. Could you please send me a quick email on chelsea_laing@rydges.com and let me know what date you checked out and the room number, just so I can have a chat to the housekeeper. Thanks again, do come back soon!

The room was very clean and spacious, which allowed us to sleep comfortably for three nights. The pool and spa facility was also great for relaxing after a long day. We also made good use of the kitchenette to make dinner and breakfast. It should also be noted that the service at the reception was very friendly and helpful.

While the location is close to the Beehive and central train station, the hotel is slightly away from the other touristy attractions (Te PaPa Museum, Cuba Street etc). Having said that, it is just a 15 minutes walk to the museum.

Would definitely stay here again.

Rydges is a decent hotel in a good location which is easily accessible to all the main attractions in Wellington. It's clean and modern with efficient service and decent amenities. Internet connection is expensive and the rooms are relatively small (even on the so called "executive" 16th floor).

Still, for a couple of nights it's a good stay.

Room Tip: Avoid the "harbour view" rooms that are below floor 12. All you will see is a carpark!
