“Good value if you get a deal”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 5, 2012 via mobile

We stayed here the night after our wedding, and had purchased a deal at $250 per night including an $100 Kirkaldies voucher. The room was a little bit worn but generally nice - huge bed and we liked the view. We found all the staff to be courteous and helpful, and they didn't laugh when we got valet parking for our little bomb! We got two free drinks with our lunch at the hotel the next day too, which was very nice. I suggest looking out for deals which make it a very good choice for staying at.

Rooms are large, clean, modern.

Staff seemed to have issues with anyone who got a deal. Booked this hotel during the wotif birthday sale and got the rate at $12.00 per night booked three nights. Asked if it was a possible for a room overlooking the harbour, was told with the price I payed I had no right to ask.

Would I stay again at that price yes.

Did I feel welcomed, not at all

We stayed for a weekend to attend the Opera the room was part of a package deal so I didn't actually pick the hotel but I will most certainly return when next in Wellington. The reception staff on check-in were very friendly.
We stayed in a very comfortable room with modern decor, plenty of space, two Queen beds, and a fabulous view of the harbour.
We had a good nights sleep with no outside road noise, even though we were only on the third floor.
The breakfast that came with our package was of a very high standard, I particularly enjoyed all the conserves available, that appeared home-made in jam jars instead of the fiddly little packets you usually get.
All in all, a fabulous weekend at the Rydges.

I was recently invited to join a friend at the Portlander Restaurant at Rydges Hotel in Wellington. Everything about my experience was amazing. The bar staff were helpful and had a huge amount of knowledge about the food they were serving. And the food was incredible! I have been a vegetarian for over 15 years, and recently began thinking about eating meat again. On viewing menu at the Portlander Restaurant I decided to try the roast rare beef crostini with capsicum sauce. It was delicious and has changed my mind about meat - I am no longer a vegetarian!

I'd asked for a quiet room with water views, but never expected to get either of these. I was delighted to throw open the drapes upon arrival and see the whole expanse of the harbour, plus the surrounding hills. The decor was great, very spacious, and fashionable. In one corner next to the windows was an extremely comfortable wing chair and large ottoman - I wanted to take these home! The only criticism I have is of the weird frosted glass wall between bathroom and bed - why???

Room Tip: Make sure you don't get a room facing the NZ Post building opposite!

Looking at other reviews we must have had the worst room in the hotel (level 11), yes it looked nice on the surface but; the shower pressure was awful and the temperature flutuated from boiling hot to cold every few minutes, the hairdryer was dangerous as the element glowed red hot and smelled of burning a few seconds after turning it on, there was a layer of dirt and dust a centimetre thick under the air conditioning unit (which was really noisy when turned on and right by the bed), the towels still had other guests hair on them (yuck!), even though we were one the eleventh floor it was still noisy from traffic and emergency vehicles going past (we faced the front of the hotel).
Most disappointing was that even though the hotel knew in advance (as we specified when booking that we needed room for a travel cot) that we were travelling with a small child they still put us in the room opposite the lifts - not good when your littley goes to bed at 7pm and there's a big rugby match on in town that night meaning guests are coming back in the early hours of the morning).

Room Tip: We had a room facing the billboard (front of hotel) which was quiet noisy with the traffic and emerg...
