“Modern Hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 20, 2012

This hotel was selected as just a sleeping point after a 12 hour train trip from Auckland. It was about 200 metres from the station so was very convenient. It's obviously a hotel aimed at Business people but the staff were quite friendly and helpful. The room was quite modern, not large, but with a balcony on the 17th floor. As we arrived early evening, and we were in the business district, local eateries were all closed however some small items could be purchased at the bar. A short but pleasant experience.

The Hotel caters for many travellers from the train and ferry crossings with its close proximity to both terminals. I am happy that you enjoyed your stay and appreciate you advising me of your experience at the Hotel. The Hotel restaurant is open from 6.30am in the morning until 10.30pm at night, however am glad you were able to get some snacks from the bar menu. I hope that you enjoyed your New Zealand experience and look forward to welcoming you back to Wellington Regards Simon General Manager

We stayed 2 nights on a tour of New Zealand. The location is convenient for just about everything a tourist wants. Our room was fine. We arrived tired and ate in the restaurant - food was surprisingly good. Concierge was helpful. Irksome features - as others have commented, room not cleaned when we returned mid afternoon - below par for a hotel of this kind. Wireless Internet free but limited to 20 minutes per session - now an outdated policy. Surcharge for use of credit card, so be warned.

Thank you for your feedback and appreciate your thoughts on the Hotel and hope that your tour of New Zealand was what you expected. Glad to hear that your meal in the restaurant was good and the concierge was able to look after your needs. I apologise for your room not being cleaned on your return to the Hotel and have worked with the Executive Housekeeper in looking at the allocation of rooms throughout the day to be earlier. I apologise that the use of free internet for 20 minutes was not up to your expectation however I believe this to be a small benefit with the majority of major Hotels charging for internet. The credit card charge is a fairly standard charge in most New Zealand and Australian Hotel chains. We have signs at the front desk, food and beverage outlets and it is also stated on the Hotel’s registration card which you complete on checkin advising you of this charge. The Hotel does offer alternative methods of payment being pre-payment, cash or eftpos cards to avoid the fees. The Hotel does not generate a profit margin from this fee, it simply covers the fee that the credit card companies charge the Hotel. I hope that the team gave you the alternative options of payment on checkout. Thank you again for your comments. Regards Simon General Manager

Comfortable room, with afternoon sun streaming in when we arrived, Contemporary, spacious, clean & comfortable room with a cooktop and microwave which would be a bonus if you wanted to do any food preparation.excellent indoor pool, spa and sauna open until 9.30 pm. Gym. We were impressed by the very friendly, professional and attentive service and excellent food in the "Plate" restaurant. The meals arrived quickly, mains were >$30 and full breakfast was $29 but the quality matched the price, Location is near the Railway station & Parliament, a good New World Supermarket at the Railway Station and couple of blocks to the main shopping area. Buses about a block away, frequent service even at the weekend. We had a bit of street noise but all quiet after 10pm. Friendly efficient reception.

We recently stayed 3 nights in a superior room, bed was comfortable, nicely appointed room, quiet for the inner city, plenty of nice towels and toiletries , even a face mask which I used, was fabulous!Friendly staff onboard. Great location, only minutes walk to the start of the shopping district and great restaurants. We ordered room service, arancinni wonderful, tempura fish ,very greasy a bit disappointed with this.

Thank you for your comments and appreciate your feedback on the fish. I spoke with Chef the day after this was posted as we have not had a comment on the batter previously. Chef spoke with the team regarding the consistency of the batter and believe a variation of the batter mix could have been at fault on this occasion as each batch is made fresh I hope that your stay within Wellington was great and you are able to return back to Wellington and Rydges sometime soon. Stayed here during Arts Festival; good hotel with modern decor and comfortable bed.

If you're catching the train or meeting anyone working in major Government Departments, the location couldn't be better; for other things it's a bit further around than other hotels...but if you like walking like me, no problem at all.

All rooms have basic kitchen facilities which is great as it means you can prepare your own meals if you prefer; a very unusual offering at a hotel of this size.

Couple of minor grumbles:

- the views are surprisingly bad given the proximity to waterfront...there are only a handful of rooms that have a decent outlook.

- there is no gym on site, which is very unusual for a hotel of this size...you can get a pass to City Fitness down the road, which is great, but it's really strange they have no real facilities at the hotel itself and if time is limited, getting to and from the outside gym could mean you have to cut your workout short to work it in to your tight schedule..

- service not great; very young unconfident staff....similiar to other hotels I've stayed at in Wellington though....they all seem like they haven't travelled much themselves so clueless when it comes to understanding what travellars are really interested in, particularly domestic tourists....they didn't even know where to recommend for a good evening meal....or where the airport bus stop was....!

Thank you for your comments and appreciate your minor grumbles as areas we can work on. The Hotel has 71 harbour view rooms out of the 280 available rooms which is in the minority, however as other guests have commented on that they are worth staying in as the Wellington harbour is fantastic. The gym within the Hotel is actually a cardio room with only a bike, rowing machine, treadmill and some handweights. We have the larger facility for our guests to use at City Fitness, one of the largest gyms in Wellington so that all guests needs are well catered for, however I do understand your comments that if you are time poor because of your schedule this would not be the best alternative. Since you wrote the comments regarding the staff we have updated our concierge “bible” and the Head and Assistant concierge have conducted training and pop quiz’s for all of the front line staff. I am hoping that this will make for better recommendations for our guest needs and I am hoping that they now will be able to at least recommend the Hotel restaurant as the best evening meal in the city. Once again thank you for your comments and we will continue to work on our guest services. Regards Simon General Manager
